Post subject:  Speedo Recalibration
has anyone gotten their speedometer aid recalibrated for tire size? I'm wonder how much it is to have it done. The shop that put on my tires sit would be $200. I cant imagine that... but I dont know

I just had mine done at the dealer. All they charged was $89.00 for 1hr of laber.

Mine was dealership done-they wanted to charge me $80 for "diagnostics" (they hook up a code reader and reprogram the ECU). This is pretty typical from what I hear from my buddies with lifts. Generally they charge you for one hour's labor for a 5 minute job. If you can find a dealer that charges less in labor or take it to an independant mechanic you might get by cheaper. Basically I waited for a mechanic to come out after the dealership was closed and offered him $20 cash to plug in the scanner and reprogram the ECU. He took me up on the offer and did it right in the parking lot in 5 or 10 minutes. Aside from being a mechanic and doing it yourself for free, I think I got the best deal. If Hypertech sells a power programmer for the Liberty (i am not sure), the programmer has a deal where you can make changes for bigger tires and different gear ratios.

I got it done the first time for free when I had the first set of tires put on. The guy at the Firestone shop had the computer to do it. I forgot to have him do it for the second set of tires though. However, just a couple of weeks ago I took it to the dealer for an inspection sticker. I asked them to check the calibration while it was in there, and they charged me $40.

The service manager (a neighbor of mine) had one of his guys do it for nothing. He'd never done it before, and since I knew the number for him to enter (often found on the tire company's web-site), it took him all of five minutes to do it.

My dealer wanted 40 bucks for it, which was what I though was high for probably 5-10 minutes of his time. I even asked if he could discount it if I other service preformed and he said no, so I just live with it. Its only off about 5% according to my GPS so I just figure it in my head.

Dealer screwed up something else (imagine that) so they did the speedo for free. :D

They initially wanted to charge me $90 for a 5 minute job.

I'm curious how many of you have verified the dealership got the recal right. I had it done at our local dealership. They wanted $89, which I thought was high. I got home and took a ride with the GPS and the speedometer was farther off than before.

When I went back to ask what the deal was, I got to talk to the tech to made the adjustment. He said the 245/75-16 was not a size they could pick from in the computer, so he had to guess. He said he told the guys at the desk that I might have to come back if there was an issue, but they never relayed that message.

We tried a couple of times where he made an adjustment, I drove around, then came back. Finally the service guy jumped in, hooked up the computer and we drove around for around for a half hour or so, stopping, resetting, trying again until we finally got it right.

I'm surprised they don't have a chart somewhere, to at least get them close, but judging from our local dealership, it must be pretty rare that they have to make that adjustment for the Liberty.

If you get the RPM's from the tire's web site, there is a spot where you can put that in. I believe when you get to the screen for tire sizes, there is one called custom. From there you can put in the RPM's. I don't have GPS, so the only way I was able to check was one of those electronic speed signs on the side of the highway. At 65 mph, I was right on the money.

To anyone that has had this done: I called the local 5 Star dealership today and spoke with someone in the service department. They said that it cannot be done since the 245/75s are not a tire that will "fit" on the Liberty. I explained the lift, adn they said I was out of luck. The same dealership has been very helpful to me with other matters, but they even told me that they have never seen a lifted Liberty. Any ideas?

If you were talking to the guy who works the service counter, he's a moron. I've found that most of my frustration with my dealership's service department is with the guy at the counter. The times I've talked directly to mechanics or the service manager, things have been different.

Your dealership is sort of accurate, they do not have the 245/75s in their computer for the Liberty. That means they can't punch in a simple conversion to set the speedo correctly. They have to manually set the RPMs. That's what they had to do with our and mine is dead on with the GPS now.

I would try bringing in the chart that PCTim mentioned. (I found the one for BFG tires after the fact.) Tell them you know people who have had it done. Let them know that both Sparks Jeep, in Concord, NC and Skyland Jeep, in Asheville, NC, have done this proceedure.

If that doesn't work, I'd contact the service manager directly. I personally hate to have to do that, but there have been two cases at my dealership where I had to either talk to the service manager or threaten to call Chrysler direct before they did something the monkey at the front desk said they couldn't do.
