Post subject:  all around tire - snow/ice/mud/hwy - questions
ok..i did a lot of reading and i thought the tires for me would be the Cooper Discovery STT so i called today to get a quote on some Cooper Discover STT tires for my 04 renegade.. I dont have a lift 'yet' but those stupid Good-for-nothing-Years are slipping like crazy on the ice we have been having.. I am at 45K on those things and I think its about time I got some new tires.. I asked the dealer about the sizes.. and they told me the smallest they can order is 245/75/16.. I was thinking I could get 245/70/16 and have little or no rubbing (from what I have read) i want to get a lift next spring but I dont think my tires are going to last until then..

any of you guys have these tires and what is the size you went with..

also.. is this a good choice.. my driveway is gravel/dirt/mud and right now we have some ice/snow hanging around on a north slope.. i have already almost slid over an enbankment because of the ice.. I am not worried about the noise.. doesnt bother me.. just want a GOOD tire that will handle what I want to do.. I know everyone goes with REVOs but I have not once seen them on any Jeep or 4x4 up here in the mountains.. I have noticed a LOT of people have Cooper Discover tires though.. dunno if thats a region thing or not.. a lot of people i have talked to local get cooper so they can put studs in them when it gets real bad..

suggestions are greatly appreciated..

Looks like a good off road tire. It does not look like it will be very good on ice though, not much siping in the tread.

yah i have been re-reading all the tire posts.. trying to figure out what would be the best tire for me.. if anyone has a good suggestion i am looking :)


what would be the best tire.. this is my situation..

i live on a mountain side.. the private road is gravel/dirt.. there are some areas that are muddy.. so far i have not had any problem with the goodyear bobo stock tires until now.. we had 8" of snow over 2 weeks ago and one section of the road is a cutback is covered with ice because of its north face and trees.. today its raining and its slippery then anything.. right now I am using some snow cables and putting them on my rear to help me up.. i tried again today w/o them and its like ice skating backwards.. very scary stuff.. i know whatever i get will have to work good on snow/ice because of where we live.. however i drive about 160 miles a day.. rural hwy miles.. up/down/curvy.. like i said the goodyear did fine with the snow but not ice.. we also go on trails and national forest fire roads.. sometimes these are all mud.. so i want a great all around tire..

any suggestions greatly appreciated.. i am looking at the revos too.. havnt decided.. i dont want to pay an arm and leg for any tire.. since i am buying 5 (spare too)..

You may have already seen this, but consider the Firestone Destination AT in 245/70. I bought five of these for my '05 Renegade (stock) and have been pleased with the look and performance.

They are ranked pretty close to the Revos, but at a better price:

Dude, I just ordered the General Grabber AT-2 from tirerack.com yesterday. They showed up today! Man..this tire is AWESOME. The tread pattern is very very similar to the BF Goodrich AT KO tire...except the tread blocks on the Generals are just a bit more open. So basically what that means is, this tire will work just as well as the BFGs in all conditions, and they should work BETTER than BFGs in the mud! I can't wait to get these tires put on! They look awesome, I expect them to perform awesome, and they are $86 each! You can't beat that!

No lift? 245/75/16's will no doubt do a lot of rubbing. You will have to do some wheel well mods. I would say, break the bank and get the lift now along with the tires. But that's just me.

Thanks for the great pictures! make sure you post some of the tires on the jeep. Also not sure if you have them on the jeep yet or not but i have some questions. I know people have said that they needed to trim, however the only people i have talked to had a 2.5" lift. You have the 2" lift like me and i just wanted to know if its really bad or not....

Also, how do they ride on the highway?

I've said it before I love these Toyo open country ATs. We've got over 50 inches of snow so far in December and they are excellent and great on the highway also IMO a great tire for the price. http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_lines/li ... /opat.html

get the tire you want like the cooper's and have them siped. Many tire shops (like Discount and TireRack) offer siping services.

I'm gonna agree with WVliberty. The Destination A/T are very nice tires. Snow, ice, sleet, rain - nothing stops these tires on a KJ. They are also quiet on the freeway at 70 mph. I have almost 12k miles on them and they look brand new. You can't beat the ~85 bucks a tire either (compared to the REVO or BFG)

I have the Cooper Stt's and I ve had them on Ice....they are a great tire and I could not be happoer with them. Get a lift and get the Cooper's
