BFG's T/A or Sport Kings'?

Post subject:  BFG's T/A or Sport Kings'?
Fellow KJ owner. (Jeep Liberty Renny 2004)

I am in need of new tires, factory ones are finished.....just about there. I had my mind set on the BFG's T/A but then my local tire shop, (friend) recommended the Sport King's which look almost identical to the BFG's T/A but I am having a hard time finding stuff on the internet regarding them. Anybody here have info on them, and if so, how do they compare to the BFG's. Price wise its no contest,

BFG's = $200
Sport King's = $165

Crazy.... :roll:

I had my hart set on the BFG's (had them on my old Jeep TJ they are awesome) but now this dealer has thrown a wrench into the equation. Says they are a similar tire, and I am saving huge.....

Thoughts? any info greatly appreciated.

The Sport Kings are made by BFG as a private lable now, they are an older version of the TA/KO all terrain. They perform well especially for the price, though what you posted seems quite a bit high. I spent $98 a tire on my Sport Kings 265/75/16's about a year and a half ago or so. Which is why I went with them.

You may want to think about if you need an AT or not, remember they don't handle mud at all, or for that matter even wet dirt will gum them up pretty good. If you are on a budget, you may want to think about treadwright MTG's good on and off road.

Those sport kings are crap ITBJHO. The sidewalls on an LRD 285/75-16 Sport King are weaker than the sidewalls on a P265/75-16 BFG Rugged Trail.

Yep over 60,000 miles on them so far, with not one problem. They've gotten me through trails in Big Bear, Lucern Valley, the Mojave Road, couple in Octillio Wells, Moab, Trails here in WA state like Tahuya, Twin Lakes, Walker Valley and Reiter pit. OMG, I forgot to mention they are P-rated too. Indeed YGWYPF. They have been an excellent tire so far, more so by the price I paid. Would I buy them again, most certainly, if I lived in a dryer climate than I do now. The PNW doesn't do as well with an AT as SoCal though.

Just FYI...

Nothing is MADE BY BF Goodrich...BF Goodrich is a subsidiary of Michelin. Just like Chevy doesn't make cars, GM does...they're just branded different.

Now, if you guys would like to post your opinions, that's fine...Just don't get pissy when somebody else does the same :roll:

OP-Remember...you strap yourself, friends, family, dog, whatever into this 4,200 lb steel cage and rocket down the highway at 70 plus miles per hour. Is your safety worth saving 150 or so bucks?

All ThunderbirdJunkie can say is...with what he knows about tires...he would not put these things anywhere near what he has to rely on to get him to work, the trail, on the trail, and home reliably. With the abuse put on a tire off road, it is not wise to cheap out. For those of you that have, that's fine...just because you've gotten lucky doesn't mean everybody will :roll:

Eh guys....

Thanks for the feedback, didnt think this would cause a "war" here. :lol: BUT I guess thats what happens when people love there own KJ's.

I have been a fan of BFG's for awhile. (had them before on my TJ) when I swapped it for the 2004 KJ Renny, it obviously had the factory tires in it, and I swore that when the time came to replacement, I would look into BFG's All Terrians again.

I was just presented the option of the Sport Kings, but bottom line BFG's look better and probably last longer, as the saying goes "you get what you pay for"

So you have owned a set of the Sport Kings?

I only see one person getting pissy. Mike, posted his real world experience with them, did you? You stated an opinion, which you are free and welcome to do, but you never said that you owned them, or that you have seen a ton with blown out sidewalls in real life. So instead of Mike being lucky, I would say that since we know he owns a set and they work great for him, his opinion seems to be the one that really counts so far. .

Have owned them, no. Would not put them on anything that ThunderbirdJunkie has to have reliably transport him anywhere.

Seen them with effed up sidewalls, YES. Those and the Mud Kings are popular in our area because they're cheap...ThunderbirdJunkie would prefer to buy 4 expensive tires, rather than have to buy six cheap tires and wind up being the same money out-of-pocket in the long run, plus the PITA of changing a tire on the trail.

Plus...if you lay a new 285/75-16 LRD Sport King beside a used P265/75-16 BFG Rugged Trail, the sidewalls are notably weaker by feel. and this is used vs new.

If you want to run them and risk your family/friends' safety, that's fine with ThunderbirdJunkie...he would not put those tires on a wheelbarrow.

If I was looking for an AT then I'd consider them for sure. I bought the tires I did because they were a great fit for what I do with my jeep. For me an AT isn't what I look for. I weighed a ton of tires when buying and measure all the pros and cons. I bought the ones I did because they were the best all around value. These may be the best all around value for Mike or WOZ4X4. The new MT/Rs were for me and before that the Trxus were. I don't buy tires because of name brand or price alone. A lot of factors go into picking tires and those factors are different for every person. With that said, it is proven that the Sport King tires perform well on a myriad of trails so I see no reason why anyone looking at an AT wouldn't consider them.
