Post subject:  Tire advice for KJ highway-driving

My dad needs to order new tires for his CRD KJ today and is having a hard time deciding between the Goodyear ST(P) for $149 each or the Goodyear Fortera Silent Armor for $200 a tire. Any thoughts? He had the STs and put 50,000 on them without any problems, although he doesn't think the ride is that great on the highway. He does mostly highway and some city driving ... may occasionally take it down a gravel or dirt road, but he isn't doing any off-roading or camping or anything really hardcore. Would he benefit from the $200 tire over the ones he had before? Anyone have experience with the Fortera on a KJ?

Check out user survey results for all season road tires at Tire rack:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyres ... p?type=HAS

this has the silent armors listed as moderately weak on treadlife. If the ST's your talking about are Wrangler ST, then they are rated very poor all around by the survey. If they are the stock tires, I would advise buying ANYTHING else. His jeep will thank him. They are quite horrible.

I've heard nothing but good about Goodyear Fortera TripleTreds, Michelin Latitude Tour, and Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza. I've heard bad things about the rest of the Dueler line, but supposedly the Alenza model is good and I think I remember people in a lexus SUV forum talking about how well they liked them.

I am currently using Cooper Discoverer CTS and they are really good in the rain, better than anything I've driven on snow, and even pretty decent on ice. They are comfortable and quiet and handle decent too. I think they ran about $130 each but I don't remember for sure. They are either a 60k or 70k mile tire.

EDIT: Heck if you want mine for about 1/2 of the new price, they've got 10k miles on them. I just got a lift and I'm going bigger. $300 for 5 tires that were bought at the end of january and have been rotated every 3000 miles. Plus actual shipping.

+1 for the Destination A/Ts. Rated number 1 on Tirerack. I have them on my KJ and I absolutely love them. HUGE difference coming from the stock Wranglers.

Whatever you do, stay away from Goodyear as a whole. Horrible tires. Check out Firestone/Bridgestone, Michelin, Yokohama, General.

Stay away from the Bridgestone Dueler HT....have them on my Durango.

Cons:
1. They are noisy....increases with age...
2. They were kinda pricey
3. Very easy to puncture...
4. Bad in dirt (wet or dry) And I don't expect much from them in that way, but they seem like an AT on road, an HT off road.

Pros:
1. They do look okay.
2. Ok in light snow (under 4")
3. Rain performance is fine.

I have Michelin Cross Terrains on the KJ...

Cons:
1. Looks
2. Flat spots after sitting

Pros:
1. Quiet
2. Great in rain
3. Tread wear....

Cooper Discoverer HT's.

Pros: Awesome dry weather handling, no noise (even when worn out), comfortable ride, cheap.

Cons: On a scale of 1 to 10 in the rain, they get a 2 from me. 1 being a bald tire.
