For those of us who have an auto transmission, it is obvious that we should have the speedometer calibrated for speedometer reading accuracy. But, will having the speedometer calibrated also put the shift points back to where they need to be?

The only place it can be done,it's called a "pinion reset".

Cheapest I have gotten a "pinion index reset" done is free. It takes less than 10 minutes to do (requires a DRBIII and you need to know the rev per mile of your tires [get this number from TireRack]) and if your service manager wants your business he will throw it in for free. Good thing is that you will not have to do it again unless you change tire size or manufacturer.

Speedo is based on the sensor on the transmission, right (same place as the old pinion wheel from non-electronic jeeps)? I know the Odo/EVIC/ABS comes from the sensor on the rear diff. How is calibrating that one for a new tire size accomplished?

Dan

'02-'05 KJ's use the sensor on the rear diff for the speedo,'06-'07 KJ's use one(or all 4) ABS sensors for the speedo. The 2 speed sensors in the trans is only to monitor the input and output speeds of the transmission input/output shaft speeds.

So, on my '05 CRD (with one ABS sensor), getting the adjustment will fix the speedo and odo at the same time. Excellent, now I just need the bigger tires to justify it.

Yep and will make the trans shift like it did before the larger tires.

Now lets says that Dan wants to throw in some 4:10's, now, how does new gears effect the adjustment?

Better brake out the pencil/paper and the calculator, your going to need it to offset the rev's per mile of your tires.

LOL, that's what I thought. Maybe I don’t need the Speedometer calibrated (and shift points corrected) if my 4:10's accommodate for the larger 31" tire. Just a thought..........

HELP !!! I took my 04 KJ to a dealership and had my "pinion index reset" without any prob's. Then I took Towstrap's 2005 KJ to the dealer and had his "pinion index reset", of corse a PROBLEM !! the speedo quit working and a check eng. light came on with the code (p0502 VSS/ Range Performance). I then took it back and the Tech hooked the DRB III up and did somthing , it started to work again. I droped it off to Towstrap, he then took off to work and the speedo quit working again! (p0502 VSS/Range Performance) code came back. I checked the speedo sensor and wiring on the diff. , looked ok , and suggestion's ?????

Here are the number's I came up with from a tire chart that was programed into the module's.

MY KJ (265/75/16 = 637.23 RPM)

Towstrap's KJ (245/75/16 = 661.93 RPM)

I had the same issue with mine when I first got it from the dealer. I had them check the numbers again and they had it in wrong. It ended up working fine, but the tech did say that there was a maximum input number (tire size) the KJ's system would allow. The first number they put in was too high and the system didn't like it. Maybe that is his issue, but from the info you posted, that wouldn't make sense.

Every tire manufacturer lists a revolution / mile for the tire - TireRack lists those in the 'spec' section

Well, I took Towstap's KJ back to the dealer and the Tech. and I decided to go with the largest tire size avalible in the DRB III, which was 235/75/16, the speedo work's great, only off less than 1mph and the shift point's seem better !! :D :D :D
