What are everyone's thoughts on aftermarket siping of tires? I just bought 245/70/16 goodyear wrangler silent armors and I go to school in Vermont. I go skiing at least 2 times a week and I have noticed that the goodyears are not as great in the snow as my past tires. I had revo's last and they were great in the snow I think this was because they had more sipes in the tires. My local tire shop will sipe the tires for $15 each and they say it will help a lot in the snow. I am just worried about how they will wear in the summer.

Any thoughts appreciated!

-Matt

Pros and Cons.
Pros -better traction on wet/icy roads.
Cons - Decreased tirelife.

Yep, that's pretty much it.

I had my current set of MTR's siped by discount tire. about $10 a tire. much better traction in the wet and on ice.

I siped the previous set myself. Very easy and very effective. I took a razor knife and broke the blade so that I could safely cut the tread and not go to deep. Took about 15 minutes per tire. Just jacked up the front, marked my starting point with a piece of masking tape. did one tire at a time, then swaped the tires front to back and repeated.

How much more tire wear will I see?, I spend a lot of time on the highway in during the summer and want to get lots of miles out of these tires. Being 18 and spending $1000 on tires is not something I can do all the time.

Thanks,
-Matt

I didn't see much extra wear.

Discount tire only siped the center tread blocks of my MTR's, left the edge blocks alone. That prevents chunking on the edges where its most susceptable, especially when you have them air'd down.

The spacing is important as well. 1/2 inch between sipes worked well on the MTR's which are pretty much solid blocks of rubber. Don't know what the tread pattern is on the Silent armours, but you want to avoid siping that will create small blocks of rubber. Keep the siping in the large rubber areas.

I siped my son's continental conti-tracs on his ranger myself. They had about 40,000 miles on them and were slick as snot. The siping made a world of difference and we kept them on the truck for another 15k even through the winter.
