Post subject:  Max Tire Size on unlifted '05??? Final answer?????
Just bought a beautiful set of 5 Rubi rims for my '05 Liberty Sport ($250 for all 5 by the way, 100 miles on 'em). Now time to go buy new tires to put on them. I've spent hours on-line reading various Jeep websites trying to figure what the maximum size I can put on WITHOUT a lift. Of course, there's a hundered different "theoretical" answers out there so can someone, who has actually increased their tire size without lifting, please tell me what they've actually got on the KJ? I'm sure 245/70's will fit with no rubbing but I'm trying to get to a 255/70 or 255/65 size. I'm buying these tires next week (mid January '06) and the tire dealers will not allow you to "test fit" tires anymore so once bought, I own them!!!

255/70 will fit but will rub really bad offroad, and probably rub a bit in reverse. I have 245/70 on my unlifted '05 and when I stuff em offroad they rub, but not bad enough to rip off the fender liner. I bet 255/70 would have a chance to cause damage when stuffed because they are just over that threshold. The 245/70 size looks really good un an unlifted KJ, and will still look decent lifted.

Pixeldzn, I really appreciate your input but I am really trying to get some input from someone who has "actually" tried a 255 series of tire. Would like to know if they succeded or failed. I'm about to spend a $1000 this next week for 5 Revo's and want to get it right, no room for error on this.

So come on folks. Someone out there must have tried it themselves to use a 255 on an unlifted KJ or know someone that has and the result was either good or bad. I already know 245/70's fit, but will a 255/70 or 255/65 fit???????

There has to be a hundred posts on the various jeep BB's and a lot of "theory" out there but hasn't anyone ever really put it to the test after 5 years of these KJ's being on the market? Am I going to have to be the first?????

on my unlifted 05 RME, i went from the stock 225/75/16 to 235/70/16 revos perfect fit, same overall height, just a whisker wider

If this guy's correct, then 255/70/16's do fit with no on-street rubbing and a minimum for the real offroad stuff on a KJ WITHOUT a lift.

Unless someone's got a very strong argument/proof otherwise, guess I'm about to drop a $1000 on some new Revo's this next week.

I think the CRDs are a little taller than the gas Libertys. Might want to look into that a little bit.

Dude, if you drop a grand on Revos you are nuts. That's 200 bucks a tire. I bought a set of 255/70s for $422 delivered to my door. And they are totally awesome tires. If you are stuck on the Revos you can get them for ~$125 each on tirerack.com. Then just take them to Wal-Mart and have them installed for $40. $1,000 for tires is NUTS.

My 255s rub only slightly at full lock with a lift kit. With no lift, you are going to rub front and back, especially off-road. If you don't mind rubbing they'll work. If you don't want any rubbing they won't work. And CRDs are the same height as V6s...no suspension differences just FYI.

Thanks for the input. Actually, the Revo's work out to $802 mounted/balanced/taxes, not a full grand but close enough when I add in my Rubi rims.

Anyway, real interest is DO THE 255's FIT???!!!

Appreicate the input on the CRD springs/height issue. I couldn't really see Jeep putting "special" springs on just a few CRDs.

Like I said, the 255s do rub. Originally I didn't notice any rubbing with them (you may notice this in some of my other posts). But now that I've driven with them for a while I am noticing some rubbing during tight turns. This is on the street. Off road they are definitely going to rub front and back.

Now, the question is...do you really think you'll play around off road in your Jeep? If you plan to stay on the street 99% of the time then you can probably live with the 255/70s because the rubbing won't be bad enough that you'll tear things up. However, if you think you'll get the Jeep off-road and have some fun, then I personally would not use 255/70s on a non-lifted Liberty.

When I had a bone stock KJ there were some really tight tolerances in there. I lifted and kept the stock tires, and I still noticed that when I flexed it really hard the tires would rub in the rear inner fender well, and it appeared that I rubbed just a little on the "pinch weld" in the front too. So now, with 255/70s I know for a fact that I'm going to be rubbing off-road, but I haven't had a chance to see just how bad it's going to be yet.

LibertyCRD, THANK YOU! Finally a straight answer from someone that's actually fitted the 255's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll be getting some 245/70/16's to be on the safe (and bit more sane) side.
