265/25.4= 10.43
10.43*.75 = 7.8
7.8 *2 = 15.6
15.6+16 = 31.6

however remember the 10.43 is the widest part of the tire - i.e. the bulge is the sidewall - it is not the tread - to find the treadwidth see if the manufacturer listed it - for 265's they vary from ~7.5 to 8.5 obviously the tread is what rubs so wider treads will require more clearance
(not all manufacturers list it)

Most of the tire companies list their size in inches.

I fyou want a 265/75/16 tire, the specs usually list the actual tire diameter. Not all tires at the 265/75/16 are the same diameter. An MT will be bigger than an AT.

Correct, assuming 265/75R16. 265/70R16 are almost identical height/width to a 31x10.50R15, but I've found they are harder to find in this size.

If you research, it seems like most 31's are actually a tad shorter than 31, 32's are a tad shorter than 32, etc.... Interco generally runs true or a touch taller than advertised. 255/70/16 may be the closest metric to most 31's, and many 245/75/16's are going to be close, IIRC.

Most 245-75-16s and 265-70-16s work out to be about the same height in the real world it seems

+1 I've done tons of searching for new tires, and I've found almost all brands: 245/75R16, 265/70R16, and 31x10.50R15 are all about 30.8" tall. The 245's are just a bit skinner.
