Ply Rating and tire recommendation.

Post subject:  Ply Rating and tire recommendation.
I was looking at two tires. One has a 3ply and the other has a 8ply. Is that a big difference in strength?


(BFG Mud Terrains - 3ply)
(Super Swamper SSR - 8ply)

hmm don't know much about the swamper, but the BFG muds I run on my rover and in that size it's a 3 ply side wall and a 10 ply around the tire.

with that said, it's a great tire and has worn well.

I have push these tires hard on sharp rocks and all and they have not failed. Great tire IMO. ALTHOUGH be prepared as they are very loud. Going to a 245/75/16 tire typcially are a 6 ply and are much quiter.

I was just looking into some different tires as well and was told by one of the tire guys at a place that I called. Stating that the ply only references the tread on the road and not the side wall. I specifically told them that I would be going off road and wasn't looking for a "P" rated tire because I didn't feel that the sidewall would stand up to the off road. Anyone have any additional comments about this? They all told me that a 10 ply tire would be too rough for such a lite vehicle and that the 10 ply tires are made for specifically for loads.
Thanks for any other comments and/or recommendations. I think for this one, I would go with the BFG's.

You've got the side wall ply and the plys going around the tires. Usually the bigger the tire the more ply goes around the tire, but the sidewall ply's stay the same. Most tires have a 2ply side wall.

The hardcore offroad tires, such as BFG (MT & AT) Goodyear MTR, and etc. use a 3 ply sidewall so that you can air them down to get more traction, this puts more stress on the sidewall and that is why you need some extra support.

The KJ isn't no "light" vechile is weighs in close to 4800lbs... not like a CRV..

The more ply the louder the tire is, however the tread is what really makes it LOUD. Like a Mud Tire compare to an All Terrian tire. The mud tread is sperate more to allow the tire to clean itself out with mud as the tire spins, this allows for air to bounce off the tire creating more noise.

depends on what you'll be using it for. if you have a lot of mud you should consider a mud tire. if you do rocks and dirt trails a a/t will actually do better.

a good all around tire is the BFG A/T KO. I also like the Goodyear MTR, it's not really a MT more a AT. NEver ran it though so I can not give you first hand expereince.
