3.5 would make a wider stance then 4.5. 4.5 is wider then the stock 5 or is it 5.5?

yeah stock is 5.5 or a little more. you want 4.5...that would be perfect. 3.5 would be the widest...but it might also wear out your joints too fast. i think 4.5-5.0 BS would be ideal for these jeeps.

its not the joints that wear out from too little back spacing-its usually the wheel bearings

These things have issues with the ball joints with stock wheels as it is. I'd say adding leverage to them in the form of lower BS wheels would just add to the stress and wear the joints out faster. As well as the bearings like he said.
