Some day i would really like to get some new tires. Ive been looking around at tires forever and i really dont know what to do. Ive got the 17in rims and that makes it hard to find a tire in a size that i like. Currently ive got the stock 235/65/17 hp's which really are not that bad. I would really like to get the 245/65/17 which is on a 29.5in tire and is no bigger than the 235/75/16 that comes on the 16in rims on the limiteds and sports. What im wondering is if 1. Is my gas mileage going to fall and 2. Will it feel like a dog towing a boat or just driving up hills(eastern Kentucky)? Some people have told me that they noticed a different with the 29.5in tires, and some people say they couldnt tell a difference. I have no idea what to do.

the stock set-up on my RME renny was 225/75/16 which is 29.1" or so?
not much less then what youre concerned about. i now have 235/70/16 revo's, which is the same overall diameter as stock. the jeep feels great!

My 04 Sport came with 235 70 16s and I switched to 245 70 16s and can feel no real difference, except it goes better in the snow, wet roads, handles better, but as far as performance I can not tell any difference, mileage is still about the same, so going up one size or so should not change things that much.

You won't even notice a difference. You are only gaining 1/2" in diameter. That is less than a 2% difference. I am running a 245/75/16 and could barely notice a difference, anything less and I don't think you could tell. I doubt you gas mileage will be effected. The largest effect would be from running a mud tire. All those big knobs add rolling resistance.

I have the OEM rubis 16", Mechanicas 16" and the 17" chromes and find that I 'feel' I sit a bit higher on my 17". I run the Fortera HL on those are about 29.6" OAD I recall.

17" is less appealing for off roading vs 16" (that is why there are fewer off road tires for the 235 65 17) I am told cuz you can't air down as much...

don't notice any gas mileage gain/loss except when I run the grippy snows (16")... see my GY Fortera Post here...

I'am running the cooper stt and you can tell the difference. my gas milage has dropped about 3 to 4 mpg. down shifts more going up hills it didn't before.but thats all right. cuz the way they proform off road I thinkit is a good trade off.and by the way I didn't the liberty for gas mileage.since when does MPG matter on a 4x4 anyway? thats like building a hotrod and crying about the gas mileage. you can't have both preformance and good gas mileage. and the same for 4x4 can't have both good off road preformance and good gas mileage.

So what are the WIDEST tyres I can run on a STOCK KJ CRD with 16" while towing? Then I can choose on tread patterns in that size. Not worried about noise. I do want something with a rather stiff sidewall with a R rating. H speed rating would be good and maybe 250-300 tread wear rating, max 320.
