Post subject:  What is a good, moderately priced tire that handles well?
on SNOW?


I live in Interior Alaska... mostly flat, but november-February are our rough months when it's super cold (-40 below or colder), and days when it warms up and freezes at night again, making the roads slicker than crud. We get our roads graveled but our roads are plenty dangerous anyway- Sliding into an intersection or rear-ending someone is scary.

I originally wanted to magically find the perfect tire that gave an aggressive look and handled well in all seasons and off road. My mom suggested studded tires or Blizzaks as my winter tires- But since we have snow from mid October until April or even May, snowy season is dominant here and I dont want ugly Blizzaks on my Jeep all winter long (unless i have no freakin' choice).

Could I find a suitable tire that's not going to have me murdered on the road?
Should I get two seperate pairs, one being Blizzaks?
Could I get "aggressive" tires but have them studded?

I'm still a bit new to this stuff, so forgive me o_O

The General Grabber AT2 has the "Severe Snow" rating, and it's moderately priced. I've had two sets and they have been excellent tires...though I admit we do not get as much snow as you get. Compared to other ATs they will excel in the snow however.

Ive seen that name on here several times... They aren't a ridiculous price, either!

Snow doesnt concern me AS MUCH, it is easier for me to stop on, it's the ice that gets me, like at intersections and highways- Sliding through a stop light is scary business!

Does anyone use tire chains In bad weather? How can I find out if those are legal here or not?

ATXKJ- LOL, i have seen those before! There was someone selling a Wrangler this summer that was outfitted with those badboys :D

The GG AT2's are also studable too. GY Dura Trac is as well.
