I have been doing a lot of looking at tires and realized something that I had not known. I was under the impression that the tire size was:

TREAD WIDTH/ASPECT RATIO/RIM SIZE

But it is actually

SECTION WIDTH/ASPECT RATIO/RIM SIZE

The section width is the widest part of the tire. The tread is something less than that.

What I am finding is that tread widths vary from 6.0 in to 8.0 in on a 225 tire. And that a lot of the manufacturers do not list the tread width for truck tires.

So I have some questions for those with wider tires. Where do they rub if they do, not on the KJ but the tire: IE top of tread, side of tread, side wall, etc.

I have a stock CRD and I want a wider tire, I am not planning on lifting it, I want to keep it stock for a few years until the kids get a little bigger, they have a hard time climbing in now at the stock height. So what I want to do is get the widest tread that I can get without rubbing. I will be going off road, trails, woods, lakes(frozen), not rock climbing.

I've just gone through a very exhaustive and time consuming search on the same issues, except I wanted to also add Rubicon rims. Mine is an "unlifted" 2005 4x4 gas engined Sport.

As the Rubi rims have a slightly less offset, my stance is about 4 inches wider. I'm running 255/65/16's and get only the most minor rubbing when I crank the wheel over hard left, but not right (go figure?).

Offroading, not rockclimbing, I've got no rub except for the above stated hard left turn.

Got to tell you, I love the Rubi rims due to the added track width and the 255/65 tires are a lot more meat on the road/dirt. The wheel wells now look like they've been filled in.

my '02 sport with 255's rubs on the sidewall of the tire (it bumps the sway bar a little at full lock)
