I just replaced all 5 tires on my Libby diesel. I went with an increase from the 245 70 to 245 75 BFG TA/KO's.

The tire dealer said that the price was going up by 10% in the next week.

He also said that he had heard that the price would continue up another 10% the following month. Said that the price increases were due to steel prices going up.

Why would the cost of steel affect the cost of rubber?

Other than the steel belts in the tires I don't really see much.

Arrgghhhh.....a quick check on the futures chain on crude oil (at http://finance.yahoo.com/q/fc?s=CLK10.NYM) shows the futures prices all UP today, but that should not mean that the price of gas, oil, petroleum etc is going that far up in the near future.

Contrary--they are up just a bit for future delivery contracts, meaning that they expect the price to go DOWN in the future, and demand for contracts at the higher strike prices is UP, which is causing the temporary bump up right now. (People are rushing to buy now to cover a bad position in a short-sale.)

I think you'd be seeing a much higher % of change if they were truly going up.

Is it true that Cooper is the only U.S. tire manufacturer left to be owned and made here? I don't believe in protectionism, but something's awry in this market. If all these other countries can make tires with less labor, cheaper resources, or cheaper ingredients, that's fair. If they can do all that and get the product here and compete, that's fair. I support choosing to buy U.S., not forcing it. Our choices are limited...

Every Cooper tire I have seen in the last year have "Made in China" stamped in the sidewall.
