Post subject:  85 series tires
Doesn't seem like anyone has tried them on their rigs. Are they to tall, or to heavy or something? Saw a set of 235/85-16 on an old 4 banger jeep the other day. They look taller than a 245/75-16 by quite a bit.

245/75/16 is defined as:
245 width in mm
75 is height 75% of width or 60% for 60's 70% for 70's etc...
16 rim size
so yes to answer your question they, the 85 series tire in question, is about an inch and a half taller than the "standard" 245MTR's I want and so many others use but keep in mind a taller side wall is a weaker side wall or a heaver tire due to increased load ratings.

I remember somebody running 235 85 bfg's. Do you like them? Can you post a pick of how they look on your kj? Do you know what the weight comparison is between the 245 75 and the 235 84? Thanks

look here for a nice set of specifications on many tires. You can get the manuf. claimed weight and dimensions.

I almost went with this size because they are an inch taller than the 245/75's and I didn't want all of the weight of the 265's. I didn't because those tire are SKINNY. They are even skinner than the stockers and just wouldn't do in the sand.

In the end, I am glad I went with the 245's becasue I can stay in overdrive on the highway OK. Any taller and it would shift down a lot more I think.

Well, don't people run stock tires in the sand? Because these would be wider than my stock tires for the CRD. They weigh less than the 245's. I wonder which would affect gas mileage more? With the deisel I don't think it would downship more but that is just my guess. Anyways thanks for the help, still want to see pics cause these would be wider than my stock and quite a bit taller. The reason I bring this up is that they are $125, cheaper than the wider tires.

I am running 235/85/16's and have been since the install of my lift. I like the extra lift. I have MT's just a generic brand and then went back to AT's becuase I don't do as much wheeling as I was at first and wanted something a bit quieter for my daily driver. The AT's do fine for what I do. I have pics on my cardomain site.
I do have a problem off road with them when tucking, because they are so tall. Other then that I have had no other problems then others that have needed to do some trimming as well.

I have done some cutting behind the foglight door area and also some heating and bending of the plastic. Nothing I would consider major. I have a differnt off set rim now and it rubs slightly on the fender flare, I've considered trimming the fender like a couple have done to the bumper at the fog light area but, I haven't decided yet. The rubbing isn't that bad at all. The trimming again, was nothing major. Mostly heating and reshaping the inner fender liner.

Yeah, I have 255/85/R16 Trxus MTs. I like the added height, and the narrower tire (85% profile) makes it a little lighter too. Depending on the depth of mud, it may cut down to the firm stuff better. However on soft deep mud, a wider profile will be better, to 'float' on the mud a little.
