I need new tires soon. What is the narrowest tire of close to the same height I can get to get my contact patch down and lesson resistance to increase MPG? Thanks. |

Use miata.net they have a good tire calculator that tells everything |

I had a similar thought last year. Bought a set of Bridgestone Dueller HT 225 70 R 16. They've had a tremendous effect on fuel economy; dropped about 2 mpg. That's right, dropped. Good luck. |

the 215/85/16 will get you pretty close - it's abit taller - thinner and only comes in a load E from a mileage standpoint - you might want the stockers - however I wouldn't want them in rain or snow |

I would think weight of the tire would be a bigger factor than contact patch you would need to go with a thin sidewalled highway tire and the stock tires for the Liberty are pretty much that. I got smaller width tires here recently but they weighed like over 10lbs more a piece... MPG went down.... |

Thanks AT. My CRD must be heavy. Lol. My 225's barely fit without rubbing now! BUGGER. |

No way would I go with E tires, you'd lose way more power than gaining from going to narrower tire... |

weight... you can get a good P rated tire with similar OD at almost half the weight it seems like. Depends on what type of tread you want, but I'd guess daily driving is what you'll be using the crd for right? |

I use my CRD mostly for backpacking trips into the high country. Logging roads and such. Yes I drive it around but mostly hiking trips into the Cascades. |

I miss the cascades... Tirerack lists the weight of the tire for each size. Have you decided on a brand, or are you picking size first? I'd stick with the 225/75, you could only go 10 mm narrower to the 215, but then you'd need 285 aspect, which is going to be E rated 10 ply most likely. For example, E rated 215/85 Kuhmo A/T were 42lbs ea, But same Kuhmo D rating 215/285 weight 38 lbs (lightest 215 I could find) but you can get a 225/75 general HTS at 30 lbs. Really depends one what brand you want, what price, and tread style. |

I found a nice rated Kumho Size: 225/75R16 that weighs in at 30lbs. It's an all terrain tread pattern. Do you really think tire weight means that much? In comparison to tread width and the drag it adds to propulsion. Im looking for an all terrain type tire. Id like to keep my mileage as best as I can. |

Weight is huge on acceleration and deceleration - not steady state it'll have more effect in stop/go traffic - highway - not so much although thicker tread could mean a lot fewer flats. |

Well, the Army just paid for my physics class, SOOO...! More weight WILL cause an increase in friction, INDEPENDENT of tire contact patch, and it will take more energy to get up to speed like AtXJ said. But once you are up to speed the inertia will keep it rolling longer comparatively. So it's a combination of everything. I personally don't think going to a 215 is worth saving 1 cm in contact area, if you find the tread you want in the 225, I say get it! |

Thanks guys. I ordered some of those Kumho's. They are only 3 lbs heavier than stock and they are AT's. 225/75/16. |

The tread width friction loss is to little to actually measure from a 215 through the 245 widths. It is the weight that takes the greatest effect.Every 1lbs of rotational weight is like adding 10lbs actual vehicle weight, effects braking heavily also. |
