Hi Folks,

Well I went ahead and bought the 255 65 17 tires mounted on 17 X 8.5 wheels and they fit with no rubbing and "no" lift. I say "no" in quotes as I did make 2 mods. First I did the 3/4 inch clevis lift (3/8 lift of the clevis translates to a 3/4 inch lift) and second, I pounded down the pinch welds at the back of the front wheel wells. The tires come very close to the fog light doors on the front of the wheel wells at full lock and are pretty close to the pounded down pinch welds but no actual contact. The trick is to get wheels with the correct offset. I used a wheel with a positive 35 millimeter offset. The offset determines how far the mounting surface of the wheel is from dead center. A positive 35 mm offset means that the mounting surface is 35 mm out from center. The width of the wheel is not too important since the center line of the tire will be at the center line of the wheel so if the wheel is out 35mm then the center line of the tire will be out 35mm regardless of how wide the wheel is. Anyway, I hope this info helps folks thinking about a 255 tire without buying a lift. I don't plan to do any off roading so I'm not sure if there would be any rubbing at full lock when the suspension is fully articulated but I don't think I'll be in that situation and if I am then a little rub on the foglight door won't bother me. Cheers!

Must remember though that most when running a 255 are running a 70 series not a 65 which is a lower profile.
Should be fine for on road driving though

Usually they are running it on a 16 inch wheel though. He's running it on a 17 inch wheel.

255/65/17 = 30.05 inches
255/70/16 = 30.06 inches

Yes, good point as tires from different manufacturers can vary slightly in their total diameter, treadwidth and overall width. The tires I went with are the Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10. It is a decent all terrain tire with fairly square shoulders. There were a number of all terrain tires in that size and the Hankooks had good reviews so I went with them.

Depends on brand / tread type etc can be a lot more
