Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry... Oops, I mean Guard Dog, Axiom, Warden...

I am seriously considering Treadwrights for my next set of tires. While there are many threads out there about how Treadwrights compare to regular tires (heavier, etc.), there aren't many that describe the experience outside of the popular Guard Dog model. I like that the Guard Dog looks aggressive/awesome, but it is an M/T (mud/terrain), so on-road manners and traction in the snow would not be as good as an A/T (all terrain). In the 245/75/16 size that I am looking at, there are 3 A/T options: Axiom, Puma, and Warden. Since 90% of my driving is on road in the northeast and midwest where I see lots of rain and snow, but the other 10% I am on forest roads and two-tracks in the mountains, I need a good balance of handling and traction.

So my question is, who has these other Treadwright A/T models, and what do you think?

I did a lot of my treadwright research on other forums. Found great reviews elsewhere on wardens, someone on expeditionportal.com said they handled nearly identical to his bfg a/t. You could get "kedge " grip if you wanted better snow/ rain performance!

I have the Sentinel AT on my wife's suburban. They have been a great tire. They are very similar to a Bridgestone Dueler. That have had great wet and snow traction (in the very little snow they have seen in TX). I ha e had them for 2 years, about 30k miles and they still have about 9/32 tread remaining. My only complaint is that one of the 5 I initially ordered had about 1/4" runout. I called them, and they promptly sent me a replacement.

A set came in the shop today,3 of the 4 had 1 patch already in it and the 4th had 3.All took 20+ oz of weight to balance.What a joke.

Were they "new" or had the customer abused them at all?

I've had great luck with them. No holes at all. Took little weight to balance except for the out of round tire I mentioned earlier.

I also ran a set of Guard Dogs on my KJ for about 18 months / 35k miles and they were great. Still had plenty of tread when I got got the itch for new shoes.

I rarely run tires longer than half their life. I like to switch things up. And with over half tread left on tires, I can still get a fairly good resale on them on Craigslist. I have the Cooper Discoverer ATP on my KJ now and they have been decent too. Just not that aggressive.

They had been just shipped from treadwright,still had the packing slips taped to them.

Personally from the ones I saw 3-5 years ago to the last set of Treadwrights I saw, I think the quality has went down some. Years ago I worked at a tire shop that also owned a reterading shop. They would never use a tire that had a previous hole in it. Treadwright will now

That is definitely a change from the 11 tires that I have received. Each one of mine was clean and clear, no previous holes or patches. I inspected each one carefully upon delivery. In fact, I had called them prior to ordering and asked specifically about this. They told me at that time that they would not use any casing if it had a hole or patch in it. They also said that they did some sort of x-ray checking of each casing to insure that the wire plies were not damaged. If they are allowing patched tires to be re-treaded now, it is a major change in quality since I ordered my last set.

TJ, were the ones you saw the new bead to bead mded design, or the original design with the OEM casing side walls? Wonder if maybe that plays a factor? Mine were the old style, not B2B.

They had the sidewall casing cover to hide what was the old make/brand and original DOT#.


Sad part is he paid $40 less per tire(after shipping) then brand new for a Destination AT and $80 less per tire(after shipping) then a Destination MT.That is a expensive used tire.

It sounds like their bead to bead remolds may not be up to the same standard as their traditional retreads. Good info there, Troy, Tom, arengant & LTT. I don't think I will be getting those until they have fixed the quality control problem. I am more interested in what people have to say about their standard non-Guard Dog offerings, like Axiom or Warden or Puma (no Sentinels available in the 245/75/R16 size, unfortunately). Has the quality there been affected too?

I went with some Treadwright Warden A/T, in 245/75R16 load range E.

They handled/grip the same as my previous BFG All terrains did, but are wearing out abit faster.

Mine's not the bead to bead retread though, I guess they changed that over the last few years. So far, I'm pleased with these tires.

I am ordering a set of Guard Dogs just to get me by for a couple of months until I get the Duratrac's. I've heard a lot of good things on some local Jeep forums about them though.

Just got in new set of 4 of the new bead to bead Sentinels. Not one of them had a patch. All looked great.
