Post subject:  Duratracs price tracking

I've been looking into getting a set of 245/75/R16 C-rated Goodyear Duratracs. One thing that has me confused is how much the price can vary day to day, even on the same website. I've seen them anywhere from $155 to over $200 a tire. So, I've decided to track the price over time to see how it changes, and see if there is a pattern. If there is, then we can figure out which day of the week to get Duratracs at the best price, and that will help a bunch of people save money.

For the Noobs, here is what a Duratrac looks like:
Image

The two websites I am tracking are:
TireRack.com: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Wrangler+DuraTrac
DiscountTireDirect.com: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/tires/goodyear/size/viewProductDetail.do?ra=%2Ftires%2Fgoodyear%2Fsize%2FviewProductResults&pc=31919&ar=75&rd=16&cs=245

Tirerack has a helpful ratings and reviews section, as well as lower prices, but shipping is extra. To my zip code, the shipping cost is $118 for 5 tires. Discounttiredirect.com has free shipping included in the price. Goodyear currently has a rebate of $60 on a set of 4.

Prices below are per tire:
Day of the week: TireRack Price / DiscountTireDirect Price
Monday: 154 / 175
Tuesday: 185 / 175
Wednesday: 154 / 175
Thursday: 154 / 175
Friday: 154 / 175
Saturday: 154 / 175
Sunday: 155 / 175

I'll update this post as I get more data...

OR
you could just take the online best price into a local tire shop and see if they will price match. If they do you're done. Thats what I did when I bought mine a couple of years ago.

$206 on the Goodyear website.
Maybe better at the Goodyear store, though. Especially using Tom's suggestion :D
Didn't think of that...

Including mounting and balancing?

And to sort of hijack my own thread, I have another question. How long do TPMS sensors last? Should I be budgeting replace them when I get new tires? They will be about 6 years old.

The batteries in the TPMS sensors generally last from 5-10 years.

As far as a local place price matching remember to figure in shipping as they will when price matching a online price.

Man looking at those prices for 245/75's is kinda a rip.I just picked up five 315/75R16 Firestone Destination MT's for street tires to save my MT/R's for trail use for $171 each.

Conclusion: There seems to be no predictable pattern in tire prices. I'm into my second week of price tracking and the expensive days the first week are not the expensive days the second week. The only constant seems to be that TireRack prices fluctuate a lot and DiscountTireDirect prices are fairly stable. If you can hit TireRack at the lowest price (which seems to be about $154) you can get a better deal if shipping is under $20 a tire. I like TomMudd's idea of taking an Internet quote to the local tire shop to see if they will match it.

When I bought mine I did it at the end of the month, Saturday afternoon 1 hour before closing. They were slow, I walked in asked the price, they told me , we talked and as I was leaving told them I could buy on line for X number of dollars. Salesman made a call to someone, said he price match. I said so you'll give them to me for what the price online is. Yes he said so I got them for Internet price mounted/balanced/and all taxes . Beat the Goodyear store by over 40 per tire.

Very savvy. 8) I will be trying out your strategy probably at the end of the summer. I have some life left in my Coopers (maybe 35,000 on them now) that I'd like to make the most of before I change them out. Thanks for the tip! :)

Used to manage tire stores so I know when they're hungry and when they'll deal.

Ha! I just saw 245/75/R16 Duratracs for sale at a Goodyear store in Ann Arbor is morning for $165 each, installed. And that's even before any haggling! I love Midwest prices. Or is it I have issues with how much it costs to live in Philadelphia? :dizzy:
