I have been reading and reading as many posts as I can regarding this topic. I am getting ready to pull the trigger on some new tires and also thinking about some new wheels.

For those with experience in the set up let me know what you think on this set-up. (Will it be ok?)

- Currently: Stock wheels with 2 inch lift and 245/75/16 BF A/T

- Thinking about: Cragar Soft 8 16X7 with 4 inch BS. For tires thinking LT245/75R16/C Duratracs.

I would appreciate any advise on this. I think it would look good on my Cactus Green Renegade but really want a better stance with the tires and backspace. What do you think?? Also is the rim much heavier to cause any issues?

(Looking at these wheels at Summit, Cragar 3977712, are these correct for the liberty bolt patter?)

They're freakin heavy! Don't get em if you plan to drive a ton and not off road..... Find a set of moabs and paint em Black..... :2cents:

12lbs heavier than KK stock 16s. The 16x8 soft 8s weigh 35lbs. After upgrading I think I've only lost an avg .5 mpg

The wheels are a lot wider than stock on my kk and it looks great. They stick out slightly past the fender.

Thanks for the feedback. I was a bit worried about the weight but its not my daily driver. Still I wondered if it would have an influence on my power and gas. (But do like the look)

If I went with Moabs then my understanding is I would need them from a 2003 to 2006 is that right?

If there isn't much really of an impact I may go with this set up (I didn't think it was 12 lbs but now that sounds about right.... hmmmm)

If you're thinking of Moabs then remember they are 8 inches wide, 7 inch wide with 4 inch backspacing works way better on and off road

There is not a lot of weight difference between 16x7 steel rims compared to TJ MOAB's since the TJ MOAB's are forged alloy rims and heavy.


Keeping the tires at a load range C will be the major factor since most 245/75's are load range E tires so you will save a lot of weight there alone.

Thanks. So then it sounds like I possibly will not see really much of a difference between Moabs and the Cragars if I go with a load range C tire. Is there any issues with the C load range tire? Maybe difficult to find?

Anyone find they had hotter than normal brakes when going with the steel wheels? I was wondering about that also. Seems the extra weight may be a lot for the breaks but not sure.

245/75R16's are a 3/4-1 ton pickup tire(used to be) and generally load range E so will be a heavy tire compared to the same size in a load range C.Just very uncommon to find a load range C tire in that size.

I never had a issue with brakes running 265/75's on steel rims and I had rear drums.It only became a issue when I went to 35" tires.My last set of 265/75's was Trxus MT's,load range D, mounted on 16x7 steel rims and weighed 92lbs each then I went to 35x13.50x15 Toyo Open Country MT's on 15x10 steel rims which weighed 130lbs each,big difference.I now run(offroad) 35x12.50x15 MT/R K's(load range C) on 15x8 cast alloy rims which weigh in at 89lbs each,for street driving I run 315x75x16 Destination MT's(load range D) on 16x10 cast alloy rims which weigh 96lbs each.

Cut weight and get great traction with Hankook 235/75R16XL tires instead of the Duratracks.

Braking has been fine for me and I've had no issues with the 16x8 wheel

Thanks for your help everyone!! Great information. I think I will take the plunge on the wheels and update. I have heard of the Hankook. I will take a closer look at those.

Any updates, did you buy your new wheels? I ended up with black rock brand D-window wheels. I had to send one back due to excessive runout. Wouldn't balance worth a crud, checked the rim itself, and it was waaay off. Maybe stick to cragars.

I got the Cragars in. I am going to mount next week. I will upload a pic next week. They are heavy but hopefully won't be too much of an issue.

Duratracs come in load range C. That's what I run, 245/75-16 load range C. Can't help with the rims though, but you already sorted that out 8)

Going to get mounted today. Anyone using the Cragar center caps? I don't want to use but now sure how to get around in the front. Looks like I may need. I feel like they are just going to be smashed the first time I take it off road.
