Over the last few months my tires have gotten progressively louder until they just got to the point of being unbearable. They are Goodyear Duratracs, with approximately 60,000-70,000km on the clock. They are around 8/32" to 9/32" of tread left all around and show no signs of improper wear.

They start getting really loud between 70km/h-90km/h and are quiet once I hit 100km/h. There is a slight vibration that can be felt in the floor as well. I originally suspected wheel bearings and I replaced both sides (they were due after inspecting them) but the howling never disappeared. Today, I rotated the tires to see if that would make a difference...it certainly did. I can still hear the howl around those speeds, but it's about 90% quieter and moved to the back of the vehicle. Do I have a bad tire or did the simple act of rotating them essentially fix the problem?

Thanks as always!

How often do you rotate them? I find that mine like about every 3500-4000 miles. After 5000 or so they start to howl some. Mine have a little over 75,000 miles now on them

It's been longer then I would like to admit probably...maybe 20,000 km/12500 miles. Over the passed year I've been working out of the city and putting on a lot of mileage. I think I'll be watching that service interval more closely now. I still can't believe what a difference it has made though.

13,000 km on mine now, rotated all 5 for the 3rd time bout 2 months ago. Still 15-16/ 32 tread vs new at 18. The 1/32 came off in my first 3000 km road trip till they got worn to my alignment.

Since rotation i've got a huge howl at 50 km/h that goes away +- 5 km in either direction. Once since rotation and have changed wheel hub and cv in the process chasing it down to tires.

They did quiet down after a 500 km road trip but its still there. For the record as long as they keep pulling me along like last winter i don't care what noises they make.
