Alright, Tom has definitely educated us on the best wheel size for a lifted KJ. I just wanted to get a list, and it's probably out there already, but I couldn't find it. I think I also read that there aren't really any strong aluminum 4" BS options out there? :banghead:

We can get Moabs off of craigslist for less than a new set of Crager Soft 8's that are a lot heavier (almost 10 pounds each!)...lame.

I have the diesel for power and mileage, I just wonder if there are reasonably inexpensive wheels, like Moabs, that are 16x7 4" BS. I want the stability of the wider stance for safety, so to heck with spacers that could compromise safety.

ok, I just read an article that seems to show that wheel spacers are safe if installed correctly.

So, should I just run Moabs with spidertrax? That would be 3.75 backspace. Is that 1/4" enough to be a problem? Sure doesn't look there is much in the way of options for solid aluminum wheels.
Factory wheels with spacers would be 4.25" hmm

Actually, since I was thinking of running 235/75's, they would be sticking out about 1/4" less anyhow. Maybe this is a worthless thread... :dizzy:

Moabs are 8" wide vs the 7". The width also plays into play too.

Dang, I forgot about that. So they would be too wide then with 1&1/4 spacers with an OME lift? Probably really close eh? hmm, I don't have a clevis or top plate add. Maybe I'll just play it safe and run the light stockers with spidertrax. Dang, and I wanted to rob the Moabs from my latest purchase, but I'm a function over form guy.

The Moabs are 8" wide and 5" backspacing......sit out the same as a soft 8 (or similar) thats 7" wide and 4" backspacing.

Thats why Moabs are so popular. Its almost a perfect fit for the KJ

That makes sense, and thanks! So, you gain half of that extra inch, basically putting them at 4.5" BS equivalent I guess? hmm, right on, I guess I will just run them, and they're basically free :rockon:

The Moabs will fit great, will give you a wider stance and minimum rubbing. Can't go wrong with the Moabs. The only issue is that they are 8" wide so 245 width is about the minimum that can safely be mounted. I've seen some fitting charts that show 255 as minimum, but Jeep shipped Rubicons with 245x75 R16 on Moab rims.

cool, thanks man. I hope 245/70's are just as safe, because I need to run them to leave space for chains

Mudd just told me that tire is to narrow for the Moabs.

Do you really want to run a tire with 7 inches of tread width on a 8 inch wide wheel?
Sure it can be done, we've stretched 5.60-15s onto a 7 inch wheel for some guy back in the day, did it work, not really but thats what he wanted :banghead:
Jeep did in fact as we all know install 245-75-16s on the 8 inch Moabs
They wanted to be able to advertise they had the Rubicon with 30 inch tall tires and 8 inch wheels, more marketing ploy than anything really
