CRD Compass - spotted!

Saturday morning, just south of Jackson, heading East I passed a Car Hauler with 6 NEW jeep Comasses, they all had CRD Badges!!!
Unfortunatly I did not have a camera with.

I had heard of the future plans with the Grand, but the Compass???

I had a friend tell me some time ago a diesel would be in the compas, but I didn't/don't think they would be for US sales. Sure hope I'm wrong, as I would love to see that happen. Also I doubt that the Compas has the front end suspension strong enough to hold our CRD, maybe a VW TDI 1.9L diesel. But who knows??? :?:

As manufacturers look to the future, the new turbocharged 2.0 litre 120 CV common rail has to be the first choice for those looking for a cost effective solution to the EU. 4 regulations.

This engine has one of the leading torque / CV figures for its class. Technical features include a belt-driven single overhead camshaft with four valves per cylinder, and a central vertical direct injector with a zero degree, narrow valve angle. Finger followers, actuating two valves at a time, control the valve aperture. The engine features exhaust gas recirculation through the cylinder head. Twin gear-driven balance shafts are fitted in the oil sump for additional refinement. The vacuum pump is fitted to the alternator and, for greater efficiency, the oil pump is a rotary vane type.

The maximum torque of 260 Nm (192 ftlb) means strong pick up. The latest common rail and multi-valve technology gives class-leading economy and driveability matched with compliance with current and future known emissions regulations.The further addition of an optional VGT turbocharger further increases the power output to 150 CV and torque to 280 Nm (207 ftlbs) .

This engine is not currently produced by VM Motori but is produced under license by GM Daewoo and Hyundai M.C. in versions suitable to the respective applications.

Unfortunalty the vehicles did not have window stickers on them.
I would assume the smaller above listed VM engine would be the critter.

From what I read a few months ago, DC is buying TDI engines from WV for the smaller FWD Jeeps and Dodges. It is interesting to see them on a car hauler. Would think they would be in rail cars enroute to the export docks.

Currently the VW 2.0L diesel is going into the Compass for export. I believe it is the Pumpe Duese motor (PD for short), not a Common Rail. VW hasn't brought out Common Rail engines to the market yet. Assembly is at the Belividere, IL Chrysler plant.

Interesting,

Must have used all the turbo diesel badges on the Dodges, and was left with just excess CRD's :lol:

Now I wish I'd had the afternoon to follow the guy to the next Weigh Station.

Maby the Patiot Blue Lib. could have been mistaken as a Statey and I could have done a "freight inspection"

Stuff like this makes me happy. I see someone brought up the possibility of a smaller CRD. I think I could go for that.

Still dont like that compass though.

You see all kinds of interesting stuff on the roads around here (Southeast Michigan). In May I spotted a GC with CRD badges and manufacturers plates. And last week I noted that the Dodge Caliber in front of me in traffic had Manufacturers tags and a little 'CRD' badge. I believe the Caliber is the same platform as the Compass.

Yeah its the same CRD engine I saw in the caliper here in Auburn Hills, its also going in Patriot , in the caliper highway mpg is supposed low 30s, i would suspect the same in the two little jeeps

By the way D/C owns MB and VM, along with DD, so they have lots of diesel mfg power. The CRD from VM we have uses 3 rd gen CR tech, same turbo type and brand, DOHC engine also, same EGR and CCV setup, same electronically controled intake air throttle, same quick start crematic glow plugs only real difference is we have 2 less cylinders and cast iron blocks. I doubt that you will ever see a MB V6 CDi in a caliber, it will be a VW, or VM engine most likely.

Man that would be awsome to have a MB 3L V6 CDI in a Caliber since it can push an E class to 135 in US trim and 150 is easy to do if chipped I hear.

I read about a year ago that DC was gong to assemble a minivan for VW in St.Louis plant+that it would have diesel option(probably an'09 model).Maybe they'll be supplying DC with engines for others also. :roll:

Also,DC owns 49% of VM Motori,51% is owned by Roger Penske.

The MB 3.0L V6 CRD engine will be found in all of the LX platform vehicles in Europe (Charger, Magnum, 300, 300 Wagon) with the W5A580 behind it if memory serves me correctly.

Nitro (KA), Wrangler (JK) will feature the VM RA428 2.8L DOHC 2.8L VGT with piezo injectors capable of 7 injection. This engine is totally redesigned WRT the R428 from KJ. Much quiter and smoother and cleaner.

KJ engines are 2nd gen CR components.

Caliber, Patriot, redesigned Sebring, PT have the 2.0L Volkswagen CRD VGT engine. It's very nice.

Is that 2.0L VGT VW engine the much maligned PD "Pump Dusse" or something different? Those PD's have a fun amount of torque and are definitely quieter....but loose a bit on the milage end, so it seems.

Also, the PD's are known to be a bit less tollerant of first generation BioDiesel (current type from rapeseed or soy).

That's a good question...From what I was told I thought it was a common-rail motor, and I know it runs on a version of the EDC16 controller. However, I haven't seen one without the plastic engine cover on so I'm not sure if it's actually a CRD engine or the PD system. They are badged as CRD, but the average Joe Shmoe consumer probably would never know there's a difference...

A PT Cruiser with a diesel would be a good small mini-van type car I could see using for my small family. At least then I couldget the KJ back from my wife!
