I recently purchased a 06' Liberty CRD. One question I have that is not clear in the owners manual is about the fuel/water separator. Is this to be used periodically or only when you get an alarm that there is too much water in the fuel system?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The owners manual is in the garage so I'm quoting this from memory which is sometimes faulty. I think the suggested replacement is 25K miles.
If you get the warning light, it means that water has accumulated in a water resivour at the bottom of the filter and you need to change it immediately.

Some on the board do it themselves by either replacing the whole filter or draining the fuel filter through the bottom and then pumping new fuel in with a hand pump. I just replace the whole filter.

Note the wiring for this system is delicate if you do it yourself be careful with the wires. I twisted mine a bit and developed a short somewhere. So now when I go through a carwash or drive through rain or mist of fog, a short develops and falsly indicates that water is in my filter. The light goes on and off intermittently in damp conditions.
