The icing

ECONOMY & C02
Urban Cycle 32.1 (8.8) mpg (l/100 km)
Extra Urban Cycle 51.4 (5.5) mpg (l/100 km)
Combined Cycle 42.2 (6.7) mpg (l/100 km)

Thats about 43 US MPG highway! And you know we could make it do better than that!  :x

I don't know if you factored it in or not, but the UK gallon is considerably larger than the US gallon. I'm sure it does nicely, but I'd imagine its closer to 35mpg or so, which is still spectacular.

I used this page

http://www.teaching-english-in-japan.ne ... s_per_100k

5.5 L/100km = 42.76 US MPG

Jeger, I had the opportunity of driving a Patriot CRD Sport yesterday, and very nice it was too. The engine is a VW unit and is only available as a six speed manual. I've been driving a KJ Sport CRD auto for nearly to years but didn't find the switch back to stick a problem. The engine is a lot quieter than the 2.8 VM unit and is very responsive. The main draw back for me is that there is less room inside for my camping gear - the KJ usually ends up stacked to the gunnels! But needs must, if the current climate of 4 x 4 persecution continues in the UK, along with the ever increasing price of fuel ( approx $2 per litre ) I would certainly consider this a viable option.
Hopefully I will be getting a 48 hour test drive on the Wrangler Unlimited Sahara CRD in a couple of weeks or so. :D

Thanks for checking in...
A 6 speed VW powered Patriot....make a no frills offering and it would sell like mad in the states, especially among the younger buyers. They dont have a bad view of diesels like previous generations do.

I am envious of the selection of vehicles you have available to you. Especially when it comes to diesels. You will have to let us know how you like that wrangler.

No problem Jeger :)
Diesels are popular over here because of fuel costs. Although we have a good selection of vehicles there are a couple on mainland Europe which we don't see ( yet ), for example - Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon - available in Europe in petrol & Diesel but only available in the U.K. as the 2 door petrol model. :(
Also, we have very limited colour and trim specifications over here. You can't buy a Patriot with Freedom Drive 2 and grey trim is the only one on offer plus 5 exterior colours ( Silver, Black, Inferno Red, Steel Blue and Jeep Green ). Jeep's Mygig system isn't offered but the Boston Acoustics system is. :?:

*Update 29th July 2007 *
Took a Wrangler Sahara Unlimited CRD Auto out today for about an hour without a chaperone :D . Very impressive indeed.
A lot of windnoise on speed over 60mph, but not unbearable. Cabin felt a little claustrophobic - probably because of the roll cage. Steering was a little vague at low speed - but not a problem.
I would seriously consider replacing my KJ with one of these, but can't afford to at the moment :( . I would have preferred to have tried the 6 speed manual version though.

My Patriot is averaging 43mpg (36mpg US) on my 20 mile mixed town/country drive to and from work. On a 60-70mph highway cruise mpg is over 50mpg (42mpg US).

On the same 20 mile mixed drive to work the 2.8 CRD Auto Liberty/Cherokee does around 29mpg (24mpg US) and a loaned Dodge Caliber 2.0 CVT Petrol 26mpg (22mpg US)

Cheers
Lee

I am sure Consumer Reports will come out and say they get 11mpg.

Yeah, and dynamite Bob Lutz fresh out of "retirement" says there is no business case for light duty diesels in this country.

He's right of coarse. Nobody would want an SUV that gets over 40mpg in this country.
