That's awesome. I can't help but hope that with military's involvement and need for durability that we CRD owners may benefit. Plus there will be all kinds of cool engineering tricks we could adapt, starting with that hood incorporated snorkel.

so can the liberty crd tow the 7000lb rating????

Although I think they use a different style hitch..overseas the liberty/cherokee is rated for something like 7300 LBS with the auto tranny.

Im sure it would pull it.

CRD's are advertised as 5000 lbs towing capacity, but I've towed heavier loads (probably close to 7000lbs). I towed a 24 foot boat, 400 miles. looked kinda funny and got lots of comments, but did not have any issues pulling it at 75mph.

The only real drawback to the CRD and the Wrangler as a tow vehicle is the wheelbase.

Our CRD motors can tow a LOT more than our wheelbases can handle. Put 5000 pounds on your trailer and then tow it up a hill. You see quick that it would be able to haul a lot more than 5000.

Do you think Chrysler fixe the TC issues? I can't imagine the transmission lasting very long in military service if they didn't.

I have pulled a loaded Tractor Trailer with my KJ and also have pulled a Fire Truck with 1000 gal of water .(1 gal of water = ~8.14 lbs. So that is a little over 8000 lbs) No problems. I don't think I would want to stop it though.

I'm not sure Chrysler would have approved it but I pulled our 16000 lbs broke down service truck down the freeway at 55 mph for 10 miles with my CRD Liberty. I wouldn't be afraid to tackle 7000 lbs for a long distance.

One of the limiting factors of the Liberty with towing is not the Engine or Transmission but the light weight rear suspension linkages that use soft bushings. The light weight rear suspension linkage geometry along with the independent front suspension is what gives the Liberty the great handling. Exotic European cars with their trailing arm rear suspension can be a nightmare when towing any thing other than the smallest trailer. When I towed my 71 VW bus with a tow bar my Liberty CRD did not like going around the sharp corners and the rear suspension would complain and set of the ESC warning light. After a few corners, I figured out how to make the corners and had no more problems on my four hour tow. I never had a shortage of torque and did not down shift out of overdrive.
My old Scout with Leaf springs and solid axles, had a towing capacity of 10,000 that I used more than once, but towing 10,000 lbs required the use of an equalizer hitch. I pulled the old Equalizer Hitch out of the garage at the old house and will be cleaning it up and checking out all the components before I hook up my tandem axle 7,000 Lb trailer.
With all the Lawyers and stupid clients they represent, Chrysler has chosen to take the easy way out by reducing the towing capacity rather than recommend the common sense technology like an Equalizer Hitch that some of us who are old enough to have been around.
