Post subject:  CRD GC exhaust question

Hello, I just picked up an 08 CRD fri and love it so far only about 200 miles so far, but on the 100 mile drive home we averaged between 24-25 mpg running between 60-70 mph so I am very pleased so far.

Even with the windows closed when I pulled up to stoplights I would notice a exhaust odor, I have several other diesel vehicles and have never noticed this before, I would like to hear from other CRD owners to see if you have noticed this also?

I am thinking it is just the new smell, or maybe the way the wind was blowing I have been busy so it has not been driven since bringing home and puting it in the garage

Thank you

Not a GC but the KJ CRD seemed to smell a bit strong/funny when it was new. Still wouldnt hurt to crawl under there and take a look at things though.. Most of us here probably crawl around under our jeeps at least twice a week if not daily

Thank you, yes will do.

The smell was not too strong and really didn't bother me I was just wondering if this ws normal on these vehicles. There were no other CRD's on the lot or I would have taken them on a short spin.

Thank you

My Libby CRD didn't smell until I did the Elephant Hose Mod...which I did not route far enough back out of the engine compartment. I think that there might be some fumes under the hood and they get sucked in. This happens on my Jetta TDI also with the EHM. I'll get a longer hoses soon.

I doubt that an unmodified CRD should have exhaust smell poping in unless you are facing downwind. Here are some things to look for under the hood:

-Dirt/oil/grease on the engine which is slowly cooking. Wash engine...carefully
-Rubber bands/parts slowly burning on the engine (this happend to a LOT of libbies, some genius at DC tied back some wires with a ubber band and when it snaps it sits there and burns)
-Parts/hoses rubbing/resting on hot parts the way they should not. Check hoses.
-Leaking fuel lines? Trust us, it happens around the fuel filter on the libby CRD and can cause fires. Follow the routing, keep an eye out for stains or weepeing lines or joints.
-Leaking window washing fluid. This happened to a buddy of mine, drove him crazy until he found it
-Radiator issues (leay fluids hoses or radiator). Hate that.

There, something to keep you up at night worrying. Cheers!
