Anyone know the biggest diesel that can be reasonably swapped into a 99 Cherokee? I've seen 4BT Cummins conversions and the Liberty 2.8 could be done. What about a 5.9 Cummins and transmission out of an older Dodge 3/4 ton?

Comments would be appreciated.

how much does the 5.9 weigh? It's fairly large isn't it?

The Cummins is way too heavy for that light a vehicle
the easiest is probably a 6.2 or 6.5 GMC - use Chevy big block mounts - however they're still heavy for a Cherokee
The Cummins or Isuzu 4's would probably be better.

A wrecked Sprinter 5 cyl would be my first choice, if you could ever find one.

+1 4bt,I have seen a 84 Grand and 97 cherokee in vermont @ a 4 wheel jamboree. The grand was a v-8 and needed a lot of fab work.was a good example but to much work for old truck.97 was originally 4 banger (inline) which was upgaeaded with plow package coded OEM suspension and looked like it coulda been from the factory that way. There are some folks up there that put 4bts in everything (cheaper fuel?).what you need to do is find a good "locally" used bread truck for between $2000 and $2500.Either a grumman or chevy p-30..........most of those are 100% ALUMINUM chassis..........strip what you need scrap body for between $1500-$2000 depending on market (FYI summer prices pay higher)..........$500 dollars cummins and you supply GM tranfer case......a little elbow grease will pay off big.
