I drove the new 09 jetta tdi last nite, and it is awesome. I put a deposit on one right away. 6 speed auto shifted like a dream. Fully loaded, except navigation, 24,995!

Are the engines in the 09's completely new or are they the old engine with newer, better, greener controls?

I drove the 09 as well and I must say I was not impressed by the performance. My brother got the 2006 Jetta TDI with manual and its much more agil and fun to drive. Also, I drove a Golf with the exact same engine when I was in Germany last year, and that thing would MOVE, wheel spin like crazy in second gear.

I was thinking about getting the 09 Jetta as well, but if the manual disapponts me too, I will wait for the Audi A4 TDI which is coming out next year.

The new 09 engine is an entirely new design: new common rail injection, new four valves per cylinder, new piezo super high tech injectors, new cylinder sensor/glow plugs, different EGR/ACV intake/emmisison system, new PDF exhaust system to name a few.
It is a 2.0L with 140 HP and torque around 248 ft/lbs. Common modern gassers at 140 HP do only 125 ft/lbs however...

i had a 2002 jetta TDI and loved it. i changed the injectors (powerplus 550 injectors) straight piped 3in exhaust from the turbo back .. air intake.. intercooler pipes... poly engine mounts.. VR6 clutch and light weight fly wheel. and a stage 3 rocket chip to allow 23lbs of boost :D made about 290tq and 170hp! and i still got almost 50mpgs. i imagine you can do the same to a new TDi and have the same if not better results!! just food for thought.

it was rolled into a ball when i bought it. so i fixed it into that for my first car

I'm trying to convince my wife she needs to trade in her minivan for a Jetta TDI, but she has no interest in them, or diesels in general. She's been with me enough times when the station I've pulled into either didn't have diesel, or the diesel pump was blocked (usually by a gasser using the hose next to the diesel) and we had to wait.

Yes you might have to wait to get to the pump. But the up side is that you don't have to go to the station as often.
