Like any new jeep that's significantly different than previous generations, it's polarizing. Lots of people hated the XJ saying uniframe would kill jeep...and they were really wrong. The XJ/MJ was a solid moneymaker for 14 years. The KJ was reviled for its IFS by many, but it's really quite capable with a few mods and was quite a strong seller until everyone jumped on the bandwagon and made the current generation of mall-crawling crossovers. Ultimately, Fiat/Chrysler/Jeep is doing what it needs to do to keep market share and the vast majority of its buyers happy. I can't slight them for that. Profits on mall-crawlers and urban assault vehicles pay for R&D in Moab, so I'm not complaining too much.
I will say that the fact that this new gen is now car-based is very disappointing to me personally. I thought the KJ/KK series was going in the right direction and just needed some refinement. I care more around what I can make a vehicle do than what it looks like necessarily. The looks are something that I'm sure people will get used to just like they get used to everything else. The capabilities and underpinnings of this new jeep will ultimately tell whether it's an evolutionary step for the XJ-KJ-KK line or just posing with the nameplate. not being able to make the suspension better. Not being able to make armor, not being able to easily add actual utility is what will affect its customer base, not squinty headlights

Like any other new model, we can only predict based on past experience...and we won't really know until we drive the new one.
Regardless, once jeep offers the 3.0 VM diesel in a JK, that's where my sights are set.
