Whatever it is, I definitely believe it's fixable.
The facts are that I use the key chamber to get in every time (when I could) and the day I couldn't get in, I really forced it to finally open by jiggling the key around in there.
The round chrome around the key opening looks like it wants to pop off when you try to unlock it!
