I got a dipstick from a 2006 KJ and it works fine. You'll need a scan tool to measure the trans temp, but if you have a scan gauge or other programmable scanner, you cab program the PIDs for it.

Doesn't work with my ScanGauge2, unless this is some way I don't know of.

I'm not sure how to add extra PIDs on a scangauge, but the PID you want is 21 73. From my notes, you'll get a response like 61 73 AA BB CC DD EE FF GG HH ... Where FF and GG is the measured temperature in a signed integer and the math factor is .015625. I use torque on Android and a bluetooth adapter, which makes it a bit easier to do custom PIDs.

Don't worry if its all over your head, I've yet to meet a person I can carry on a conversation about the intricacies of the CAN bus with. :-)r

Not sure if you can enter the PIDs on the ScanGauge. I know how to get to the setting and will see if it's possible. Most likely not.
Wouldn't mind learning more about the system. Make it work better and trick it to give us better economy.

If you ever wanna try and teach us, then power to you. I'll gladly sit down and read/learn. All the cpu talk confuses me like no tomorrow(funny since I'm only 20...). There's a reason why I like my old carbureted engines and muscle cars...

Cool deal. There are a bunch of folks who would be interested.

I tried the trans dipstick from the wife's Dakota and it showed no oil on the dipstick when I inserted it into the fill tube of my KK.

After reading your post I went out and measured my stick and it was 33.5 inches long to the seal o ring. Remember it didn't go all the way it was about 2 " too long. Did yours hit bottom? Something is wrong here. mine is a 2012 liberty this that what you have? Did you check it running or not? why not just use the engine oil dip stick thats what I was using after cleaning it good just run her down no need for your wifes. It must be to short or you got problems or you will soon. hope some more will try it.

I just got the Dorman dipstick...It is a universal stick for multiple applications so its longer than is necessary for the liberty. It will check the level but you can't leave it in the tube as it is about a foot too long. It comes with 3 pages of instructions and charts for the different applications.

will you please post some measurements taken so I can compare to mine. I know it's not the approved accurate way but it's better than the hope and change I'm living with now. Mine was 3 inches cold and not running and then 1 1/8 running warm in Park. If we could get 5 or so people to post theirs we may come up with a usable number to use. Won't know until we try.

Cold...not running...70mm
Cold...running...in park...10mm (This is correct according to the chart)

Only good if your list the air temps and trans temp.

Just saying "cold, running,in park---10mm" can be different reading when your at 60 degrees air temp and the next guy is at 10 degrees air temp.

Well, the temp chart only goes down to 65 degrees. If you extrapolate the chart lower, it will measure 0mm at 20 degrees at maximum fill. So...?

Mine was 10mm at cold startup. backed up, drove 20 feet to level spot and checked. Outside air temp(and presumably oil temp) was ~65 degrees

Extrapolating obvious to me won't work but your .4 inches at 65 degrees is useful information. Thanks for doing that. Mine must be over filled but I'm not going to be taking any out that's for sure. When I change my trany oil I will be paying attention to how much I take out so I will know how much to put in. Can you tell me if there is a temp where it would read 26mm? Mine reads about an inch warm and running in park. Thanks again.

Finally got a warm reading after driving home this morning. Ten miles, 75 MPH.
Outside temp... 57 degrees.
External trans pan temperature taken with an infrared temp gun... 167 degrees.
Dipstick reading running in park ...40mm. Just about the middle of the range.

26 mm is minimum level at 135 degrees
target level at 95 degrees
maximum level at 78 degrees

I'd like to say Thank you all for the information. I sure know enough now to feel comfortable with the readings on my dip stick. I sure didn't like the idea of no knowing if there was enough oil in my trany and hopefully it help some others out too. Thanks again.
