I got to try out the "Downhill Assist" option today. Wow. It actually worked!! Really really well!! If you're not familiar with it, how it works is this: (see owners manual for full/accurate breakdown).. Jeep must be in 4 LOW mode Engage the downhill assist mode (see pic)
Put vehicle in 1st gear: This will limit your forward speed to approx 1-3 mph Put vehicle in 2nd geer: This will limit your forward speed to approx 3-5 mph Put vehicle in Drive: This will limit your forward speed to approx 5-8 mph See owners manual for exact speed breakdown... The speed is governed by the use of the brakes... It's basically automatic brake control.. Anyway, it works great!! Used it on some really steep descents today... I'm a bit of a control freak so I'm not sure if I really would use it all the time. Also, I don't see the "serious" offroader using it. Still, kinda fun to mess with if you have the chance... |

I didn't think I would like the hill start assist, because like you... I'm a control freak. I like to feel the truck roll back before I start on a hill (6-speed). But it's actually pretty neat, and if you let off the brake and wait 2 seconds the brakes release and you roll backwards. Probably especially helpful when crawling slow on trails with manual transmission. Only activates on steep hills anyway. |

yeah, the hill CLIMB assist is a whole different story.... basically (for those who don't have it) it just makes it so when you're facing uphill and you put it in gear, it "neutralizes" the gravity... as opposed to rolling backwards.... |

I've used the downhill assist a couple of times, it's pretty neat. I used it a couple of months ago coming down off of a dirt, mountain road that had a lot of snow on it. If I recall, I put the Libby in Neutral and just let my foot off of the brakes... the downhill assist kept it going about 7 MPH. |

Yeah, I didn't realize at first but putting it in Neutral will work as well. I'm not sure if it's a faster speed than if you use Drive, though.. I tried them both again last weekend but forgot to verify... |
