I am wanting to upgrade to an EVIC system for my jeep. I did a search and it looks like Diggerfreek did this but I am not quite sure exactly what is entailed in this mod. I was just at the dealer for a free oil change and asked the parts department to look up the EVIC to see how it is put together. They were not much help in their search. I also spoke with a mechanic and he was under the impression the whole instrument cluster needs replaced and even then, he doesn't think it will work. So, I have a few questions:

1. where exactly is the EVIC located? I know the readout is in the dash where the speedometer is but where is the brains located.

2. Is it simply a "plug -n- play" or are there problems that people have experienced (eg. TPM's different, some devices not working, ect)? Again, the mechanic thinks the EVIC is not like a module but rather is intergrated into the BUS system and can only be replaced / added by replacing the instrument cluster as a whole.

3. Any wiring issues (eg. need to change or add different wiring harnesses)

4. At present, I have the "mid-line" cluster that tells me the temp and direction. If it is needed to replace the whole cluster, does the mileage reset based on my current mileage or do I take on the mileage from the donor vehicle.

Sorry if this seems like "newbie" type questions but I just have not looked at a 2008/2009 liberty with the EVIC to see exactly how they are put together.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm not familiar with the jeep family however some guys over at chargerforums.com did a instrument cluster swap and it worked... his "new" mileage was that of the donor vehicle...
EVIC worked fine what he needed was a new steering wheel (with the buttons) and some wire harness... it was a PITA but he did it..
as far as I recall it was a really expensive mod also
hope it helps!

I have looked in to this and have come to a dead end. The evic system is hard programed in to ecm. Switching the dash head will not do a thing. If a new head were installed, you would be blowing your money as the memory in the dash head reads the ecm programing only one and after that reading, the head is programed forever. now if you want to do the conversion to evic, and have a automatic, all you have to do is is find a wrecked limited, get the ecm, dash and steering wheel and plug and play :D, If you own a manual, it is not possiable unless you know some one that can change the factory level programing

I guess the benefits of having EVIC does not out-way the cost for this mod :( . I guess I'll just live without. Thanks for your responses.

Considered investing in a car pc? I'm using a hacked magellan maestro 4040 (windows ce core 5.0) for gps, audio, video (ripped dvds in divx format), and a few other programs. Just a temporary deal till I can install a full blown car pc that allows gps, audio, video, full web browser, and monitoring ecm...maybe.

I was more interested in the EVIC for programming personal settings, monitoring the tires (wanting to actually see the psi number on each tire instead of "you have a low tire, go find it"), and fuel monitoring. I don't watch dvd's in the vehicle (I have a laptop for that) and the radio/cd is fine at present. I also already have a gps so don't need that feature either. But, the idea of running/using the car as a pc.........interesting. Good luck and keep us posted if you figure this out.

There's a bit more to it.. basically i'm working on a system that allows me to monitor (and maybe adjust) codes, air/fuel mixes, speed, rpm, throttle position, engine temperature, cabin temperature, outside temperature, etc. Basically tapping into the ECM via OBDII heh. All through a flip up touchscreen display in the dash (and the little mini pc under the passenger seat).

kool, keep us posted this has some great potential. I know there is a program out sort of like that someone did for the Duramax diesel.

Actually those are pretty awesome if all you're needing is the basic info.

found this site, what do you all think....

http://www.jeepkj.com/evic/

could this be run in conjunction with the "mid line" cluster or will there be interference between the two.
