Post subject:  KK Wheel & Tire Survey

Ok, I know several of us are researching aftermarket wheel and/or tire upgrades, so it seems like maybe we should do a quick little survey of KK owners who have already gone with aftermarket wheels and/or tires, especially anything that alters the tire overall size and/or relationship to our Libertys.

So, if you've changed wheel and/or tire sizes on your Liberty KK, please share your experience with the rest of us. Thank you in advance. You can just copy and paste the below, then start editing the question marks:

KK WHEEL NOMINAL SIZE-DIAMETER & WIDTH (e.g. 16"x7"): ???
Wheel Backspacing (e.g. 5"): ???
Wheel Manufacturer (e.g. Cragar): ???

KK TIRE SIZE SPEC (e.g. 245/75R16): ???
Tire Brand-Model (e.g. Bridgestone AT Revos): ???

SUBSEQUENT CLEARANCE (e.g. Clears at full lock, No issues, Only rubs at full lock & full compression): ???
KK Lifted Amount & Type (e.g. 2" Daystar, None, etc.): ???

I know off the bat, hopefully we start with postings from at least:

Diggerfreak, Mr Nick, 08-FL-KK, Boblemoche, KKomando, Rubicon Rick, NYKreepytats, and anyone else

who have already blazed the trail changing out their wheels and/or tires on their KKs.

I feel so loved!

SIZE-DIAMETER & WIDTH: 17x8
Wheel Backspacing: 4.5
Wheel Manufacturer: Eagle Alloy

KK TIRE SIZE SPEC: 255/65/17
Tire Brand-Model: General Grabber AT2

SUBSEQUENT CLEARANCE: Rubbed at 3/4 lock or more at stock height, due to not enough back spacing.
5" back spacing would be perfect

KK Lifted Amount & Type: 2" Revtek lift, now only rubs at FULL lock and not nearly as hard. Again, 5" backspacing would be ideal.

Side Note: My wheels are 1" wider then stock and have about .5" less backspacing, which means the outer edge of the wheel is 1.5" farther out then stock. Thats why I have minor rubbing issues. They don't tuck tight into the wheel well at full lock. With the lift, I wouldn't even consider it an issue.

NOTICE: At 25,000 miles on the od. I am starting to get some body-roll. Thinking about placing OME shocks on my "Cherokee" any thoughts out there? It's a shame that they can't make a factory shock last past 25,000 mi. I have had my share of new vehicles and it seems as though I never got past 30K before needing shocks.

Post subject:  MtnLuvr's Aftermarket Wheels & Tires

Finally made up my mind in May regarding what I wanted to do about aftermarket wheels and different tires.

KK WHEEL NOMINAL SIZE-DIAMETER & WIDTH (e.g. 16"x7"): 16"x8"
Wheel Backspacing (e.g. 5"): 4.875" (also published as 10mm offset)
Wheel Manufacturer (e.g. Cragar): Ultrawheel, Type 174 Nomad

KK TIRE SIZE SPEC (e.g. 245/75R16): 245/75R16
Tire Brand-Model (e.g. Bridgestone AT Revos): Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs with Kevlar

SUBSEQUENT CLEARANCE (e.g. Clears at full lock, No issues, Only rubs at full lock & full compression): After just a day, there is only the slightest amount of rubbing at full lock in the back of the front wheel wells where the pinch weld seam is located. I can definitely tell that making the pinch weld modification would help clearances for aftermarket wheel & tire combinations. I don't currently have time for this modification but plan to do it sometime next winter. In my opinion, I don't need this modification for the very slight amount of rubbing I'm seeing with the wheel and tire combination I chose. If you go with an equal width (8") wheel with less backspace / lower offset and/or a wider tire size (e.g. greater than 245), then I could see where the pinch seam weld modification would be more necessary. Just my opinion and just trying to help others who are trying to figure out wheel and tire combinations for the KK.
KK Lifted Amount & Type (e.g. 2" Daystar, None, etc.): JBA 2.5" lift with JBA UCAs

KK TIRE SIZE SPEC: 255/70-16
Tire Brand-Model: BFG AT KO's

SUBSEQUENT CLEARANCE: Lots of clearanceat full lock thanks to my pinch weld mod.
KK Lifted Amount & Type total lift: 2" Daystar lift with 2 extra rear iso's to get a slight rake back.

Post subject:  Additional Wheel Considerations & Info

Ok, while trying to figure out wheel options, I knew that the wheel and tire combination needed to stick into the wheel well (toward the center of the vehicle) somewhat similarly to OEM for clearances when the front wheels and tires where turned (to full lock one direction or another).

Personally, I decided I wanted to go from the 17" stock OEM wheels down to 16" so for the any given O.D. of tire, I'd have more sidewall height. I wanted this for 2 reasons: for increased protection of the wheel rim and to help the tires visually appear larger than they actually were.

The OEM 17" wheels (on my Limited) measure 17" x 7.5" with 5.5" of backspacing. I tried to get some technical dimensional info out of Jeep sources to validate published data for this wheel, but was unsuccessful. So, given my measurements of the OEM wheel, I created a quick little comparison table below to help me evaluate the amount the face of the wheel would stick further out from the vehicle versus stock:
Image
In this table, I had highlighted in green the 16"x8" wheel options that had 1-1/8" or less further "stick-out" and similarly for some of the few 17"x8" wheels I evaluated I highlighted in blue. The 1-1/8" further stick-out was my speculation of the maximum allowable to likely work. With this info, I did a quick little sketch and dimensional study of the wheels I chose (Ultrawheel 174 Nomad) and 245/75R16 tires (30.5" nominal OD x 9.6" nominal width) to check turning radius and confirmed they should barely clear. Seeing the real-world results versus my quick evaluations, if someone wanted absolutely no rub at all (say on a lifted KK without the pinch seam modification and not under compression), then I would recommend a 5" to 5.5" backspacing on an 8" wide wheel rim. Of course, a tire with less aggressive tread knobs than my MT/Rs would probably also help. I personally chose my wheel over those that offered higher backspacing (for a 16" wheel) due to personal preferences regarding wheel styling and appearance.

As for tires, I had my local Goodyear dealer bring in 3 sizes of the MT/Rs:
1. 245/75R16 (30.5" nominal OD x 9.6" nominal width) -- I knew these would fit, but wanted to evaluate some larger OD options
2. 235/85R16 (31.7' nominal OD x 9.3" nominal width)
3. 265/75R16 (31.6" nominal OD x 10.4" nominal width)
For reference, my OEM tires were 235/65R17 (29.0" nominal OD x 9.3" nominal width).

We test fit the 235/85R16 first. Given my 4.875" backspacing on my 8" wheel (so 1.125" further stick-out), there was too much rubbing/interference at full lock on the front for my comfort level. I speculate another 1/2" or more of backspace would have likely provided clearance for this tire within the front wheel well when turning from full lock to full lock. Given this, I chose to stay with the wheels I selected and the 245/75R16's. Yes, I chose wheel styling over maximum tire size. I was also somewhat concerned about going to a tire > 31.5" nominal OD and having that much more loss of effective power since I don't plan to regear until I install lockers and that won't be until probably spring 2010. Since the 235/85R16s rubbed, we didn't even test fit the 265/75R16s which, since they're wider, would've had only more interference/rubbing since they were all mounted to the same/new wheels.

For more info on wheels and tires, see this section on LOST. Also here's some wheel technical info, definitions and other info as reference.

Hope this helps.
