Ok since I have had my hitch on I have towed a couple of uhauls in town no more than 20 miles. I have done this I say four times. In two days I m planning on moving down back home a total of 400 hundred miles and for people from california over tejon pass. I was wondering if the tow/haul button would be useful. Never used it as I was hauling light loads in San Jose. But the trailer full is estimate at 2400 pounds. I'm a newb so don't know much about the tow/haul button it was it actually does besides from what the manual told me.

I would certainly use the tow/haul…can’t hurt

does the trailer have brakes and do you have a controller? That’d make your trip over teton pass a lot less errr….exciting.

Regardless, use your gears. I have a manual trans so can’t really tell you exactly how the t/h will effect your trans but I’d guess that it in part will lock the T/C so you will be able to better gear down. If you’re riding your brakes to keep from going too fast then you definitely need a lower gear. Even lightly riding the brakes will heat them up (hard on them if nothing else but possibly leading to glazed/warped rotors, premature pad failure and ultimately total braking failure). It’ll take a bit of self discipline to roll down some of the easy straightaways abnormally slowly with the gears but you’ll be glad of it when you come to a curve.

And just for me, cause I hate an autotrans hunting around on the uphill, I’d use the gears going up as well.



oooops, just noticed that's tejon pass, not teton pass. I have no idea how steep/windy tejon pass is but assume that it's less daunting than teton pass

Well tejon pass or as other people call it the grapevine rises to about 4200 feet. I don't remember the grade up hill nor down hill. It is pretty steep though my jeep itself goes up the hill no problem until I hit people driving very slowly then I loose momentum. Overheating is big problem there especially during the summers.

From what I understand the biggest thing about the T/H button is that it keeps your transmission from going into overdrive which could burn up your tranny if the trailer is heavy enough. When I moved from eastern WA to CO I towed the 6x12 Uhaul trailer packed full and the jeep did well. It was a little light in the front so I couldnt go over about 60 mph. I also got caught in that snowstorm between Boise and Ogden,UT that dumped the earliest snowfall Idaho has ever recorded. With almost bald street tires and 4 hi the jeep never slipped once except in the ruts. Have fun !

Yes temps get up to 120 in the summer on that hill.
Yes use tow/hual button for sure...

I want to know what MPG you get or how many miles per tank refill.

Well my mpg varies some days I have a heavy foot and other days I don't lowest ever was 14 city and 17 highway right before I changed my spark plugs. I now average about 17-18 city and 20-21 highway. Although some days I get lower cause I push the pedal to hear my muffler. Santa Clara...I'm in San Jose until tomorrow when I move back home wish I had gotten to know you before I left. I have driven from San Jose to home on one tank before...a total of 389 miles...that only happens when I don't get LA traffic . But most of time driving home takes a tank and 1/8 of a tank. I'll post my mpg when I get back home...hopefully I don't hit any crosswinds.

We are still breakingin our KK... I think we hit 1400 the other day.
So our next to trip to laughlin, should help get us up in the Milage department to get broken in...

hmmmm well i towed 3000lbs across Nebraska w/o the T/H button on but i probably should have. The transmission was working hard shifting in and out of overdrive at just the slightest touch of the pedal. If I did it again I would use the button oh and I got 12mpg.

Use the tow/haul button and make sure OverDrive is locked out,your trans will like you in the long run.Just slow down a little to get better mpg's while towing.
