Curious:

Why did they go with the 3.7 V6 instead of the 4.0 Inline Six?

The reasons the 4.0L went away [except in the Wrangler, so far] was due mainly to age of the manufacturing tooling, which was worn out. The long stroke made it harder to clean up the emissions of NOx, and NIH ("Not Invented Here"), in my opinion, also reared its head. To completely retool would have cost as much (almost) as the 3.7L v6 did, and the Dodges were going to use the 3.7 as a base engine. Logically, the engine group did what they were told to satisfy the dealers...."Make a modern engine, and junk the old ones." This statement is my opinion, based on conversations at the time.

I found this on Allpar.

Heck, I don't understand why the KK didn't get the 4.0 V6 like the KA's did

I think the biggest failure with the KK is the 3.7 ... It sucks.

Jeep Liberty - 3.7L - 210HP / 235TQ ... Fuel 16/22

Acura MDX - 3.7L - 300HP / 275TQ ... Fuel 15/20
Hyunai Veracruz - 3.8L - 260HP / 257TQ ... Fuel 16/23
Toyota RAV4 - 3.5L - 269HP /246TQ ... Fuel 19/27

Jeep 3.7 gets a big ol' F-

In my opinion the whole Drivetrain sucks(engine/tranny).One of the reason Im not thrilled with my KK.

The 3.7 is a much cleaner engine then the above listed, cost's less to maintain also(no timing belts).Plus those others you listed are based of a car and are in no sense a 4wd at all, they all are FWD with rear wheel assist and no low range.

It's Jeep  ,should have gotten a '02 KJ with the real transmission

That list was just for HP and TQ vs MPG comparison. Acura has 300/275 in their AWD MDX and are very close in MPG to the Liberty. I know AWD is different then 4WD but the Jeeps are full time 2WD with optional 4WD. I just think DC could have done better with this engine.

It was also due to front impact ratings. The inline six was to long and in the way.

That comparison list (above) doesn't say anything about torque delivery. It's one thing to make a lot of torque higher in the RPM range and, thus, produce a higher HP number. It's quite another thing to make an engine with more torque at the low end and over a broader RPM range, which is more usable, especially if you're trying to design something that crawls up steep, rocky hills. Low end torque never looks as good on paper, because it is generally a smaller number than the torque made by an engine designed with a higher, peakier torque band. Also, the high-torque band engine makes a more impressive HP number on paper because HP is a function of torque at a given engine speed. Those numbers on paper make for good marketing, but don't necessarily translate to usefulness.

Well we can all agree.
they could have used a higher HP and torgue motor....

The Nitro has differant motors so we know they work.

Heck there should had beena V-8 hemi optional...
The KK is big enough... It would had been nice.

if I was not cash strapped, i would convert this to a V-8.... but that will not happen.

Any of the chyco V8's are to long.... The V6 is fine since you save a lot of weight....... It just needs to be a lager displacement V6 with more low end torque...

OR

just sell a diesel one here in the states

I hate DC for letting us have our own diesel's.
