IIRC, it was a 245/75r16

that sounds about right but I don't see why a 265 70 16 wouldn't fit cause they're the same diameter but obviously wider

That would work to I believe.... Now, if you wanted to make a front of tire exit exhaust, you could go larger.....

I have just under 3/4" of clearance all around my stock P235/65/17 (29.0" diam) spare.

I didn't have any problem mounting a 245/70R17 Goodyear MT/R down there. See also this thread which contains:

Back in June, I had and posted having 245/70R17 (nominal 30.5" OD) MT/R installed on the KK's spare rim and it fits within the area underneath and it fits fine, although snugger than OEM.

If you're thinking about 32's like I believe I saw in another post, then you may have some challenges if you have the OEM tow hitch and maybe also near the heat shield. You could wait and do what I did which was get the tires I wanted installed on the 4 corners and then I test fit one of them up in the spare well to check for clearance before I went and had one installed on the spare rim. Hope this helps.

Yeah I don't really want a tire of top of my roof and for sure not on my hood. So if the next size down from a 32" is a 31" for a spare I take it that is still a bad idea! So I want the 235/85r16 A/T a 31.7" tire, but looks like a 245/75r16 a 30.7" tire is the max size that fits as a spare underneath. So do I go with 31s?

E2: What lift do you have or are you planning on going with?

IMO, rubbing and gearing are probably more significant issues when going to a 31.7" tire.

I would just leave one of your existing tires under as a spare for normal driving. Although not ideal, it will get allow you to go a short distance home or to a tire shop.
Then when you are going on long distances or offroading put the 31.7" spare on the roof.

Because of the rubbing and gearing issues, I decided to go with a JBA 2.5" lift and LT245/75R16s for now. So, my spare fits underneath, but when I go offroading I still plan on putting my original stock spare on the roof just to be double safe.
I blew a tire on my last offroad trip so I had to put on my spare so effectively drove with no spare the remainder of the day and it made me very nervous.

Okay Okay I am getting the 4" JBA lift. As the plan was to get this liberty off the ground as needed clearance with or without the more clearance larger tires will give. If I can get a way with 245/75r16 I could just go with all 5 tires with this as my tires size. If I go with 245/75r16 then I may go with the mud for that slight extra size compaired the A/T on the BFGoodridge brand. But this is my daily driver so A/T should be fine as I life in CA where the mud? If I go with the 235/85r16 then the spare could be the 245/75r16 so not 31.7" tires with a 29" spare it will then be a 30.7" spare, better but not the best. It's just a 235/85/r16 will not allow me go into parking garages as my daily driver. By the way I have the automatic KK so the gearing should be based on that model. So where is a 32" tire versus a 31" tire for off-roading really needed. What does everyone else have?

if youre goin ATs and not with a 32 i would just go with the 265/70/16, theyre about 31x10.5 and what i run. when its time for new tires ill see if a 265/75/16 fits under there, but that could a while, or i could decide to upgrade to MTs but im sure someone will try to make one fit by then

Yeah your ride looks nice. The white and black looks good. Yeah the 265/70r16 are slightly taller than the 245/75r16 by about .3. Having a wider tire to me means less mpg and these liberties are not the best mpg. My 93 truck gets the same when I drive it hard or better mpg if a drive it without my lead foot as it is a 4.3.

So based on what I see most people have the 245/75r16 or the 265/70r16 not 32's the extra taller tires would help, but that much?? if I go with everyone who has 31's then really having that tire would keep me from leading for following. And then I can stick it underneath.

When I got a a week or so before I get my lift. Yep V2.0 JBA's are going to ship the end of next week. So 32's or 31's is the week challenge...................

Post subject:  Re: spare tire max size

im going with 265/75/16 when I get my jba in also. I want to wait a while and install other stuff first since my tires are new anyway. need to get my locker and gears in first cause you will need gears with a 32in tire. if it doesn't fit underneath ill just buy a rack and throw it up top when im out wheeling.

unless you plan on changing gears you should stick with 245/75 anyway, even if a larger tire will fit underneath.

Post subject:  Re: spare tire max size

why are you guys so worried about the spare? Theres more than enough space behind the driver seat to trow a 44'' spare for the few times your gonna wheel it. dont select the tire size based on what you can fit in the spare area

Post subject:  Re: spare tire max size

A spare is like underwear. Maybe not, but good to have but not needed.

I could throw a spare inside but that not normal and when done takes up lots of space. Being on la I am often finding myself in parking garages with 6'8" clearances. So a roof rack with spare on top would not fit. If the lift alone with the larger tire did not fit than it would not matter but I think I can fit so I worry as I can.

This is what it would look like with a roof rack and spare (245/75/16) on the roof of your KK (this is mine) and a 3.5" RK lift:
