Time for an upgrade! Curious: HOW did you manage to crush the original?

Did you smash your muffler, or your cat? They are different, but you seemed to interchange the terms. I went with a Dynomax Thrush Turbo muffler for a while until I accidentally ripped it off being rescued out of the ditch in the snow and mud. It was a great low-cost muffler. I got a super deal on a Flowmaster from a local muffler shop to replace it. Now I have a Flowmaster Delta Flow 50 Series. It is a little louder, but I like it.

i like flowmaster... had it on my 89 monte carlo ss. I smashed the muffler while in my old hometown. my buddy and i hit an old service road w/ mud pits we used to burn on in high school. It was a lil flooded out and I wasn't able to see huge rock/ruts in the pits. Found out later that the township dug it up and put huge boulders there to deter ppl from driving back there. was owned by the railroad when it was nice. what a shame. Anyway.... i don't know how we made it out the other end of the road. the cat was the only real damage beside scratches. I know i wasn't getting out in muddy water up to the door.

SO.................... Two questions,

1. The muffler is crushed right?

2. Does the Cat need replacement to?

OK, now that we got that straight..... You have a few options:

1. get a cat back system that fits a KA N*****

OR

2. Cut out the old muffler like I did and install a aftermarket one.

i would cut out and install an aftermarket. way cheaper. besides the stock is already 2.5" and mandrel bent.

yeah just put on a new muffler... remove the resonator while your at it and get a flowmaster, if you dont want alot of noise you can go with some of the larger ones, something like the super 44 like i have and digger has, is kinda loud and has some drone inside the cabin, if you wouldnt mind the noise then go with that but if you want it to purr like a kitten find a diff one haha ( flowmaster is the way to go over magnaflow but thats just my opinion)

people usually like magnaflow more becuase they are better free flowing. ive heard flowmaster referred to as chokemaster on many occasions... they usually just sound better because of the chambered design

I know my 44 moves more air then the OEM one.......

my flowmaster moves a ton of air... actually my girlfriend was behind my truck one day and i was talking to her, my friend thought he was funny got in the drivers seat and revved the engine... she was wearing a skirt and bent down cause she dropped her phone, i think you know how the rest of the story goes... but on the positice at least i was back there and not my friend haha

I have a Purple Hornies Muffler (straight through, like a magnaflow), and It doesn't provide enough backpressure, the flowmaster feels better on the libby, if I take the muffler off completely, the power and mileage are garbage.

the way it is now, I get pretty crappy mileage.

basically, more flow =/= more power in every situation. In something with relatively small displacement, such as the 3.7L, the motor needs at least a little backpressure to run efficiently and without losing power.

Remember the stock muffler is Center in / Offset out... I learned the hard way. :banghead:

I did a Magnaflow #11226. 2.5" in and out, I just replaced the stock muffler, left the resonator on.
$74.99 at Schucks.

If you want to have a listen click here.
Running, few revs, stop, restart, a few revs, then idol to 3100 RPM to shutdown.
Not the best recording, it was done with my Cell phone.
You will need your volume set about 1/3 up to get the feel for it.

Here is the rig without a muffler.

And with the stock muffler.

Post subject:  Re: Smashed my muffler, Replacements?

if the flowmaster 44 moves alot of air do u recommend upgrading the intake also? like a CAI or by gutting/venting the stock box? I know it will sound better and have a lil more power but will it harm if i do not upgrade?

 I know i want to have that feeling of the back presssure, thanks for the heads-up!

Post subject:  Re: Smashed my muffler, Replacements?

Upgrading the intake will help make the sound throaty, while giving better efficiency as well.

doing one without the other is kind of a waste, because you will be adding a high flowing component to a restrictive system. The part you are adding is going to be limited by the rest of the system

It is still going to make a difference, but you won't really be tapping its potential
