Maybe some of you guys can help me out with this one, the back side window is leaving black streaks all over the side of my jeep. It has happened ever since i owned the car and I finally can't take it anymore. The window doesn't leak from the inside and according the the dealership there is no seal behind that window so id doubt that would be the culprit. im tempted to pop out the window and see whats back there but I dont want to cause it to leak inside. Just thought id see if any of you have experienced similar issues and if you know of a fix.

Glass is glued in so you have to be very careful taking it out
it doesn't just pop out
have a glass repair place remove it and see what the issue is

Are your windows tinted? Maybe it has something to do with that? Just throwing that out there. It's also very strange if it's only happening to one side of the Jeep. Does it wipe off easily?

its the rear quarter panel window which was factory tinted, the stuff wipes off without a problem, I have a feeling its the glue holding the window in place, I called a glass shop and they want 90 bucks to take it out and re-glue, seems like a rip off to me, did some research on how to remove the glass which seems pretty simple, the glue would be the main issue because i believe it needs to be applied hot using a special giant urethane hot glue gun.

I think you should figure out for sure what it is before you tackle it, but if you can do it yourself for less than 90 bucks, you should. I would think the glue would be clear, and not black, but I'm sure it's all fancy stuff for this kind of application which changes everything. Don't understand why glue would be running like that. :?

I'm pretty sure its the same black adhesive that they use for the windshield. They may just have had a badly admixed/expired batch that starts to break down when it gets water on it. It's best to let a pro do it with the right tools and practice. Shop around for the best price but if you do it yourself and break that glass, the $90 will seem like a bargain.

Or you can McGuyver it by cleaning that groove as best as you can with some acetone and q-tips and then fill the gap with clear RTV to seal the water out and the black crud in.

Do you wash your roof? Do you have the
'flat' side rails or the 'raised' ones.
Could it be dirt coming from around them? I have a white KK, and when I clean the roof the rain channels are sometimes streaked black.

Something I didn't think about until Cherrie mentioned the roof.

You don't list your location, but it could be certain particulates in your area's unique air pollution that is causing the staining.

Out here where I live, one day after a wash, I have a thin brown layer of dust that I can only see when the light hits my hood decal just right. If you have a light sprinkle of rain, you see the dust turn to mud in the rain beads that dry into little brown circles.

I do clean the roof, but that's not the issue, its coming straight from that window and no where else, it has to be the glue deteriorating i just want to get it fixed before it starts to leak.

Seems odd though. Maybe glass was changed or a chemical spilled there. Acid rain?

How often do you wash your Jeep? Have alot of pollution in your area? Could be dirt and other junk that collects behind there.

Those 1/4 windows are glued in with windshield urathane, yes it's black and yes it will make a mess and next to impossible to get off your hands.Without the correct tools you will be hating life trying to cut it out(piano wire and such are not the correct tools),properly cured that stuff is very touch to cut.

I want to believe it's not the glue, but if you're 100 percent sure it only happens on this window, maybe it is.

During Summer I wash the jeep every week, wax and polish minimum once a month, clay bar every 3 to 4 months, winter that schedule changes depending on how cold it is but generally twice a month and if i happen to get a really warm sunny day ill wax it. I've tried to clean the window seam using car wash soap and warm water as well as compressed air to blow out any dirt or particles there's nothing back there but the glue at this point, i think I will just live with it until summer and then attempt the job myself. The steps seem fairly simple,
1) Run piano wire from the outside in under the glue and then back out through the top of the window
2) wrap handles on each end of the wire and begin to pull back and forth along the glue until you've cut all the way around
3) remove the window and clean off all excess glue
4) reglue and replace
5) let dry

As for the urethane glue gun, im sure there is a rental place that will rent one out,

There's a special tool to cut the seal, you should look into that before you try to do it with wire. The urethane is in a tube like caulk. I had my windshield replaced for less than $150 and that included the glass. I'd shop around and maybe check the dealer as this isn't normal. If you bought it new then they should cover it depending on age and miles, there isn't any signature on your post so I don't even know what year your jeep is. It shouldn't cost more than fifty bucks though. :2cents:
