I haven't attempted taking the lights out yet on mine. I've only had her for 3 weeks now....

but where is the glue at that oyu have to loosen?

can't you heat it up with a hairdryer instead of putting it in the oven and work it section by section that way?

If the glue is a foam double sided tape, can't fishing string or dental floss be used to separate the bond by weaving it through like a saw?

just wondering. The reason I ask is cause i have a sign shop and those are how i normally remove stuff, but like i said, i haven't taken my headlights out yet to look to see where the glue is., so i wanted to throw those suggestions in this thread. not sure if it'd work though

I think the lens actually sits inside the rear housing, so you can't get it off that easily. Like this:

(Orange is the glue)

Either that, or the glue is just super uber strong stuff.

its been a while, but i think earlier in this thread someone said they used a heat gun to do it. i would not even waste a second using a hair dryer

the oven is probably easier, just make sure your oven is calibrated so you dont over heat and damage the lens!

"If the glue is a foam double sided tape, can't fishing string or dental floss be used to separate the bond by weaving it through like a saw?"

it's not foam tape, it's silicone adhesive, fishing wire ain't gonna cut it (no pun intended)...honestly, the oven is the easiest way to do it, 300* for 10-12 mins, just keep an eye on it. I was nervous when i did it but as long as you don't walk off and leave it sitting in there for 30-40 mins, you'll be fine.

don't even bother with the hair dryer... just my :2cents:

just put mine back together, not to hard of a job. my oven was off 20 deg. so i adjusted for that and baked them for 10 min. make shure the burners are not glowing red when it gets to temp they will cool down a bit. i used foil on the bottom rack, took them out put them on a towel and split em with two small pry bars P.I.T.A. with oven mits on. sprayed them with satin black, my go to color. had to clean the old glue where the crome peice fit in then put them back together with a bead of black sylicone on the lense edge. make shure you clean the inside or the lense before reassembly!

Dunno if ill get a reply in time, but I'm in the midst of doing this, and my first headlight is about half cracked open. Its back in the oven, but I had the same slight melting issue as the OP, oven @ 300, second rack from bottom so its not too close to the top, and aluminum foil on the baking sheet. Also, prying is kinda making the housing look like junk. Is my heat too high? The sealant isn't letting go easy either

EDIT: I went to 270 degrees for 12 minutes on the second headlight. HUGE difference for me. Night and day. No melting and it came apart 1000 times easier.

Looks great Digger. I love those bumpers...maybe someday the rest of us will be so lucky.

I have no idea about the tail lights

I'm going to tape off the two strips of clear plastic on my tail lights, and spray the rest of it with niteshade.

**Update:
I did it, and it looks sick nasty. I'll post pics in the "What have you done to your KK lately". Thread soon

So has anyone attempted to take the lenses off the front blinkers yet using this method? I am going to attempted it tonight if I don't get a response within a few hours of a horrible ending attempted :) but will post pictures when I am done and they are back on tomorrow.

If you are wondering why I want to well it is because I did the headlights already and now the blinkers have more chrome than the headlights. That's why :) wish me luck.

Quick question. Did you guys place the front of the headlight face down on the cookie sheet or facing the top of the oven? The front would be the clear part of the assembly.

Thanks

Looks nice. I blacked out mine along time ago. I used night shades. Just traded my liberty in though. Time to join the wrangler forum. Peace out all. Have fun with your Libby's!

So I finally built up the courage to paint the bezels! With no oven to bake them in i was apprehensive about using a heat gun.
The first light took me about an hour and a half to open. The second... about one and a half minutes. It's all about keeping the heat moving and even around the whole project and having heavy gloves on :D Used rustolium satin black and nearly two toned the "gears" inside with red but it ended up being to much hassle(I'll do it to my next set that I put halos inside)

All and all these were a fun project that didnt take to long to do

Also JeepMonkey190 if you see this, message me about how you opened your blinkers I went around those for hours trying to get them open with no luck.
