 Post subject: Wiring Aux lights

Heres the deal. I want to put lights on my bumper. The problem is, I have no idea how to wire them safely. Is it okay to just go directly from the battery to the switch on my center console, to the lights, back to the battery? Ive heard some things about relays but I dont know what those are. And dont I need to ground it somewhere? Also, how hard is it to go through the firewall and then through the dash and all?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

You will definitely want a relay, you could technically do it without a relay if you used thick enough wire to handle the large current draw, but it is safer and more practical to just use the relay (couple bucks at any car parts store). To wire the switch, I would just tap into an existing 12v line (the switch shouldn't affect fuse rating of the line you choose, as the relay will not draw much current) and wire that to one side of the switch, the other side of the switch will connect to the trigger tab on the relay (usually labeled as 86 I think). The relay will need to connect directly to the battery through a fuse (probably rated around 30 A) to the tab labeled 30 (not positive of the numbers, but the packaging of the relay should specify these). You will need to ground the relay as well, you can just tap into an existing chassis ground for this, and connect it to tab 85 on the relay. Now you will connect the output line of the relay (tab 87) to your headlights. The wire from tab 87 of the relay will connect to one side of each of your lamps, the other side of your lamps will connect to the chassis ground. That should do it, just don't leave loose wires in your engine compartment, and you will probably want to cover them. Most car parts stores will actually sell a lamp wiring kit that comes with most of what you will need.

Getting through the firewall is very easy, my KK has a little cap above the pedals that comes right off allowing access through to the engine compartment. The dash is pretty easy as well, especially if you want to mount your switch on the bottom half of your dash by the little pull out tray, or IN the tray, as the bottom section of the dash just pulls down, don't even need to unscrew anything.
