I wanted some changes in design from what I saw on the web. I went to my local mechanic and he custom build everything I wanted and installed them. He also painted them which Rock Lizard won't do.

By the way. How have you protected the fuel tank? I have't been able to find any skid plate for the 2010 KK.

Not sure where you live but shipping anything that has been painted is a PITA, so the reason RL doesn't paint his, plus painting costs more money which some balk at.

Theres a mopar skid for the KK fuel tank. I have one on my '10 KK along with the rest of the skids. Ive never messed with it but I heard its a pain to take off or put on.

In the same light.. TR almost REFUSES to ship anything that hasn't already been powder coated - due to some people complaining about rust on their product after UPS let the shipment get soaked lol... go figure

If you wrap something in enough bubble wrap, and tape the bubble wrap with that fiberous tape, then pack it in recycled foam sheet or blueboard insulation from demoed buildings, even UPS's mishandling usually wont bust through to the contents

shipping them on pallets works well too

the pallets and blue board or foam can usually be acquired for free, bubble wrap.. just get it on a huge roll

I shipped a custom offroad utility box (read as, entire bed of the truck) I had built for a chevy that broke down into 5 pieces, UPS was going to charge more for unpalleted shipping than palleted

just have to explore the options and make sure the receiver understands that shipping will take aprox. a week

hardware itself if you supply that.. please don't ship it with the item.. put it in a padded manilla, or flat rate box and ship it separately.. hardware never makes it :(

btw.. once things chill a bit.. I've got a project for ya :P

Do they have a bolt on skid that can protect the spare tire under the vehicle? Something light, about the weight of a stock tranny skid, ya know, double wall stamped sheet or something, something to at least slow the threat of bleeding the tire

This is why you're smarter than me. Having them made to spec gives you time to design and sell. Instead of bringing in a fabrication partner, I should have probably just paid his money to my waterjet guy and had them welded right after cutting, and been done with it. It is pretty difficult finding the time to build them when you both have day jobs and 2nd jobs.
Thanks Boiler. I know you know you can relate to the time challenges of such an endeavor. I know I'm not getting these KK off-road armoring projects done as fast I want, much less others, but I'm continuing to spend more time and my own money to fine tune as much as I can to help make everything as repeatible as possible as well as adjustable where needed for each installation.

Jeep has an OEM fuel tank skid plate that is part of their skid plate package. Here's a link to a page showing it, P/N 82210936, for $240. This page also has install instructions.

The KK's fuel tank skid certainly could be better. When you take some serious hits to it dead center, it can bend upward. The gas tank inside is still OK, but when bent upward in the center it causes the edges to flair outward a little and then when the rear axle is flexed all the way down the drive shaft, or any balancing weights on it, can come into contact with the flared edges of the KK's gas tank skid. I've done to this to 2 Jeep KK fuel tank skids. When I eventually get my off-road bumpers done, I'm going to alter at least one of my gas tank skids and put it through some trail testing.

Nope, Jeep doesn't have a skid for the KK's under-tail spare, but I've designed my rear bumper system to be able to accomodate just such a skid. Good thinking.

 Wow, over 3,000 views on this thread and counting. Thank you all for your interest and support. I'm looking forward to completing my KK off-road bumpers and to being able to get some of them made in batches so other KK enthusiasts can armor their KKs too.

Ok, time for a little update...............

The street rod welder and body man that I've been working with at my new street rod shop (that is fabricating my prototype bumpers for me) got back from vacation last Monday 01/24. The weekend before I spent detailing out various parts or revising details on various parts for the front and rear bumpers. Now with a full front bumper welded up (as previously posted), there are some aspects I wanted to change to make it easier to fit up and install and to obtain consistent results at the turn signals and other P.I.T.A. locations.

The street rod shop welder had to work on some other work early in this past week, but I went by this past Friday. The Basic Grille Guard Hoop assembly was tacked up and looked as good as the mock-up in photos I previously posted. It is crazy how sturdy it is just tacked up and only held in place by 2 of the 6 bolts! I'm thinking of some cool photos once I'm done..... We worked through installation of the parts I had pre-cut (on computer controlled equipment) which should make fitup to certain OEM components much easier and predictable at each installation. I didn't want to have to take a step backward and lose the time (and spend the money), but I know the end result will undoubtedly be that much better as a result. Also, with most of rear bumper tacked up, we identified some changes that will make it much easier to install as well.

My tubing bender shop was swamped last week with a major order -- they build lots of tubing parts for several local equipment manufacturers. He's got my stinger hoop design (the one I previously said I'd like to use as it is easiest to implement but a more complex bending operation) and thinks he'll be able to make it up this week. In the meantime, I've detailed out the Brush Guard Light Hoops that will extend out to protect the headlights for the full-width Brush Guard Grille Guard option. I'm going to confirm fitup with a cardboard mock-up early this week and then hopefully my tubing bender shop can make a prototype set of these up too when he makes my prototype Stinger Hoop up. These 3 different bolt-on Grille Guard Hoop options are some of the last pieces I need to have prototype fabricated, fitup, fine tuned and finalized for my KK off-road front winch bumper project. As with everythnig, I'm not having just 1 of each made, I'm having 1 of each made for me, plus 1 of each made for batch reproduction jig purposes plus I'm having 1 or 2 styles made up for my front bumper beta tester.

I'm hoping in the next couple weeks to post some photo updates showing each of the 3 different Grille Guard Hoop prototypes.

My aunt and uncle that will be warehousing my KK off-road products, taking orders and shipping them have been doing research regarding shipping options and considerations for products of these sizes and weights. The good news is that it is looking like, based upon one of my prototype front winch bumpers, that it will be able to be shipped UPS. If so, this will be dramatically more economical than what the LTL (less than load) freight companies have quoted so far. My aunt and uncle have also been clearing storage space at their facility (by relocating and consolidating other products they've been selling on-line and shipping nationwide, actually worldwide). There is no doubt that if my aunt and uncle weren't willing to store, take orders for and ship KK off-road products that I wouldn't be going down the path of making my designs reproducible for resale.

Ok, that's all for now. Thank you all for your interest and support. Until I get done with this prototyping phase and then get competitive quotes to reproduce the first batch, all I can say to those seriously interested is to keep checking back and keep saving your money for some awesome KK off-road products! :JEEPIN:

very nice. When you get a chance please post an updated pic of the rear bumper design... any idea if you will be doing a rear tire swing arm?

Thanks J_I_R. Don't have a current photo available of an assembed rear bumper as its been taken back apart a couple times to swap out parts of it with improved / different parts, etc. Hopefully can in another week or so.

As noted in my initial rear bumper posting on page 1, my initial rear bumper is my "quickie" basic design and thus doesn't include any provision for rear swing-out tire carrier. It is designed and built for maximum departure angle clearance and very strong since the tail of the KK hangs out farther than other Jeeps and thus is more prone to taking hits when wheeling off-road. See the photo of my former OEM tow hitch assembly in my original rear bumper posting.

All that said, I personally would like to have an off-road rear bumper with swing-out carriers, but the carriers need to be easy to remove and reinstall so they could be easily added just for off-road trips. I actually spent some time over the holidays researching various components and working through some initial design considerations. I've got some pretty cool ideas to permit it to be versatile and customizable just like my front winch bumper. I also have already had my street rod shop (that's doing fabrication of all my initial prototypes) build me an extra rear bumper structural mount assembly that I've got at my house so once I'm done with the front bumper and current rear bumper prototypes and able to have production batches made, I'll have it available as a basis for my swing-out carrier rear bumper design. This won't be until sometime summer 2011 at the earliest.

When I do start to have my swing-out carrier rear bumper designs prototype fabricated, it will depend upon if people are buying my KK off-road rock sliders, front winch bumpers and basic rear bumpers enough to make having a KK aftermarket products company on the side worth it that I feel like it will be worth spending at least 4+ times as much to get my design made repeatable versus just being a one-off, blacksmithed bumper never to be repeated. Either way I'll have a swing-out carrier rear bumper for my KK, but if other KK owners aren't purchasing my other KK off-road products, then I won't waste the money or time to have my swing-out carrier rear bumper be repeatable -- which would seem a shame. So, whether or not my KK aftermarket products company will offer a rear bumper with swing-out carrier provisions will be totally dependent upon if we're able to sell enough of my KK off-road products to make it worth all the hassles. Just like I originally said, I would've much rather bought KK off-road bumpers had anyone been providing anything rather than give up so much of my time and such large expense to develop my own KK off-road product designs. Hope that made sense.

Now for a little update.....unfortunately, there isn't much of one this weekend. Kansas City, where I live, got slammed with a major winter storm this week, like much of the country, and most businesses lost at least 2 days this work week due to the conditions. My tubing bender shop wasn't able to get to bending my stinger hoops or the brush guard light hoops between the storm and their major production order for another client running long. They think they can do this tubing work next week. Due to the storm, I didn't make it to the street rod shop doing my prototype fab work other than on Monday. They had made the changes specified to make the rear bumper easier to take on and off as one piece and were getting ready to implement the improvements in the front bumper's front turn signal mounting system. Then they lost days due to the storm just like everyone else. It is disappointing when there are some weeks like this, but that's just life and how things go. In the long run, it won't make any difference and the final end products will be better.

Thank you to each of you expressing interest and encouragement of my effort to develop and bring to market some awesome KK off-road products.

Sorry for a delay in posting update....between business trip last week plus my street rod fab shop doing my prototype work wasn't available second half of last week. They basically shut down as they had 10 street rods they were entering into the World of Wheels custom car show that was in Kansas City last weekend. They have all types of awards hanging in their office that they've won in previous years. Not certain exactly what they won this year, but when I quickly stopped by today at lunch, I saw a stack of award plaques.

Ok, now for quick update on the front bumper work. I went Friday night to pickup my additional Basic Grille Guard formed hoops and the extension hoops needed for the full-width Brush Guard option. We then spent 1.5 hours evaluating options to get the Stinger Hoop formed. I went back today after work and picked up the protoype Stinger Hoop formed tubing pieces and will deliver them to my street rod fabricator shop tomorrow. Unless we run into some issues, which is always possible  (including the cold I've got doesn't get any worse) , I'm expecting we should be able to get a bolt-on hoop of each of the 3 different options (Basic Grille Guard, Full-Width Brush Guard style and Stinger Hoop Style) fit and tacked up so hopefully I can bring them and my KK home next weekend for some extended scrutinizing, test fitting with the winch and some photo ops. Stay tuned.......

For the rear bumper, the parts I redesigned and had remade by my sheet metal shop a few weeks ago worked out as intended. So, here's a few quick photo updates with captions:

Image
Overall shot (taken today) of the reassembled and refit Basic Rear Bumper. Part of what you can barely make out in this photo is that I've included 3/4" round steel slider skid bars for the full 2" tow hitch receiver. Since the KK's tail is so much longer than most any other Jeep (due to the undertail mounted spare tire), that is why I've shifted the tow hitch receiver up and in as far as physically possible (without cutting out a hole in the KK's OEM rear structure) and it still sticks out that far. If you go back to my first rear bumper post on page 1 of this thread, you'll see how beat to heck my OEM tow hitch assembly was. Thus, I knew from the beginning that even though my Basic Rear Bumper design moves the tow receiver further up and in for more clearance, that I wanted it to have some skid surfaces to help protect it and to help that long tail piece slide off obstacles when it takes a whack.

Image
Here's a little dated up-close photo of the tow receiver area when I last test-fit the tow plug assembly. Note, this photo was before the round bar skid assembly was welded up below the tow hitch receiver. What's that below the tow hitch receiver you ask, well, it is welded to and mounted on a heavy walled 2.5" square structural tubing member that forms the main structural "backbone" of my heavy duty Basic Rear Bumper. Why such a serious structural element? Well, go back to how far back the KK's tail hangs and if you've taken it off-road like I have, you know how easy it is to get beat up. Since there's no reasonable way to shorten the KK's overall tail overhang, it is still going to be prone to take a beating when off-roading. Thus, I decided to place some serious structural protection down low between "frame" mounts to offer the maximum amount of protection (and much stronger than just some sheet metal or formed plate). All the rear bumper plate pieces you see in this earlier fit-up are 3/16" plate steel which the rest of the bumper fascia is made of.

Image
This photo, although a little dated (before the recent parts refit), shows that I've designed my KK Basic Rear Bumper to integrate a genuine Jeep rear bumper scuff plate. Since the KK's rear tail dictates such an overhang anyway, figured I might as well dress up and add a little more function to the top of the rear bumper.

Armoring my KK into a TanKK :JEEPIN:

this look a lilttle better than from when i last saw it. my only question is from the side of the rear to the center there seems to be a height difference.... why was that done and why such a step down to reach the center... especially since your trying to maximize clearence

this look a lilttle better than from when i last saw it. my only question is from the side of the rear to the center there seems to be a height difference.... why was that done and why such a step down to reach the center... especially since your trying to maximize clearence
J_I_R, ever had the OEM rear bumper off your KK? The rear of the KK, with its under-tail spare tire, is notably different than the KJ Liberty, the XJ Cherokee or the Wranglers. Since my Basic Rear Bumper was my "quickie" design (in that I wanted to focus on my front bumper design and not get bogged down with swing-out carriers), I knew I'd still be carrying my spare tire underneath the KK's tail (even though I'm carrying a larger off-road spare size compatible with my other 4 shoes). As you can see in the below photo
Image
my square structural tubing across the low center portion is actually providing some serious protection for the KK's rearmost formed sheet metal as well as for the spare tire itself. I didn't want the spare tire to be totally exposed and at great risk of being damaged / punctured on off-road obstacles. I've also designed my rear bumper system to be able to accomodate a later skid plate system to further help protect the under-tail spare tire. Even as it is, I've gained nearly 3" of vertical clearance at the very center versus my OEM rear bumper and tow hitch. Thus, my rear bumper design is a balance between the unique needs on a KK to protect it's back end and under-tail spare (as achieved by the heavy duty center section) and to maximumize departure clearance in the critical wheel path (as achieved in the raised side sections). The rear bumper side sections are raised so much that I'm going to have to have the exhaust resonator raised (on the passenger side) as well as relocate or reorient the EVAP canister (on the driver's side). Hope that answered your question and made sense. :)

looks really good, im more interested than i was before. i didn't know you can fit a bigger tire down where the spare donut goes. that would make my clearance issues a LOT better and easier, i barely make it in the car wash :ROTFL:

Check out this thread which includes info I posted about having a 245/70R17 (nominal 30.5" OD) MT/R mounted to the KK's spare rim and comfortably fits under the KK's tail.
