Installing a better/ larger alternator in our jeeps? I know sometimes ECM's can have issues with this. Also if its not a problem anyone know any good companies... I run a lot of electrical components and i will eventually be adding another set of lights and a light bar for my roof with lights, and a winch so I want to make sure i dont kill my optima yellow top

Buy a better battery and use the correct wiring(IE correct sized wire) for any added electrical stuff.Your stock alternator puts out more then enough amps.I'm still running the stock 136amp alt and I run a winch.

And yes I'm saying the optima is a junk battery, been there done that and never again will buy a Johnson Controls battery.

As far as wiring, everything is done correctly with the right gauges, relays, fuses, etc. Wiring and electrical work is my thing, I go to school for electrical and computer engineering.

I like my optimas... my father had one in 1990 dogde ram 2500 for 11 years and the thing held a charge n ran great up til the day he got rid of the truck.

What kind of battery do you run troy?

I understand the stock alt may be enough to run a winch, but I want the reassurance that if I'm running multiple components, I wont have an issue.

Take a clamp meter and check the amprage that is being drawn from each additional piece of equipment just to give yourself a ball park of how much you are actually using

I think what Troy is saying is that the Optimas used to be good,
I used to run them but anymore they are junk IMO.
Quality has went way down hill
I bought one 4 years ago for mine and after two replacements in 6 months gave up.

As of about 5-6 years ago optima's are junk when bought by Johsnon Controls, quality went way down hill.I run a Odyessy battery(same as Sears Plantinum P1).All of your electrical add-ons won't get close to what a winch will draw, under max load a winch can draw well over 400amps.

went through 3 optimas in one year, never again!
agree about stock alternator, it provides more then enough juice to do pretty much anything
