Hey everyone. The last few days have been very, very cold here as in -15*F to 10*F. When I've tried to start my KK with the factory remote, most of the time it will start but then a few seconds later it shuts off. If I try to start it back up it just gives a single "honk" and does nothing else, no start.

Does anyone have any idea why it does this in cold weather?

Thanks!

PS: '08 Limited w/33k

I've had the same thing happen, but a little different scenario.

I'll start the jeep - and it starts fine.
THEN, I open the lift gate to load my ski gear, and it shuts down.
I try to re-start (not realizing why it shut down) it with the remote and, *honk* That's it.

Leads me to believe that your Jeep thinks something (the hood shuts it down too) is open so it shuts down?

Oh, and my jeep's started down to -30C/-22F or so before... no problems...

Brendon, I've wondered the same thing but here's the deal... It never shuts down when I open anything while it's running, e.g., back window, tailgate, doors. I've never tried the hood though. It's weird.

hmm, i'm just shooting from the hip but maybe your hood senor is frozen and is not being pushed down all the way. If you dont know where its had, its on the left hand side towards the headlight.

I'll look into this. Thanks for the input.

Stupid thing did it again this morning and it was -5* out (started and then shut off). I went out and looked, opened all the doors and hood, everything seemed fine. Tried to start it again, no starty. One honk, thats it. Fired right up with the key. I shut it down, locked it up, tried to start it again with the remote. No starty. It had 1/2 tank of fuel also.

BTW, last wekend when it was wrmer I tested all the doors while it was running via remote. The only door that shuts it down when you open it is the hood. All other doors/windows opening and closing will still allow it to stay running.

Does my useless parking brake have anything to do with this? I always set it when I park but it doesn't actually hold anything.

I think I'll read my owners manual tonight.

Another idea.

When I brought my Jeep, my salesman told me that the starter will not work if you have 1/4 or lower in your gas tank. But my Jeep will start up when its at or below 1/4 but will not start if my gas light is on. Maybe Jeep changed when the car will and will not start between your 2008 and my 2010. Next time when it get that cold out, fill your car up pass the 1/4 and see if it will start. If it does start, then odds are, its your gas level that is the cause of it not starting.

Does anyones auto start work if your more than 20 feet away. I feel like having this stock auto start is pointless because I have to literally be within 20 feet of my car, I can't even start it from my room in my house, I have to walk to the other side of the house.

Mine works from allot further than that. Thru two walls to my car is 50 ft. at least. My after market starter (Compustar) had a 1 1/2 mile range . Check out the Tech section or do a search I think there is a TSB on the 08 remote starters, key remote.

I have the factory remote start too. That part of the key works really well. Itll turn the car on from the other side of the house. But my lock and unlock buttons are HORRIBLE. I have to be littertally right next to the car for them to work. I might have them give me a new key if thats covered under warranty. If it is, that might be an option fort you too if all else fails.

I have had no issues with my remote start, though I've noticed that you cannot start it if any of the doors are open. Also, if it is unlocked when you start it, it will lock before it starts. You can open the doors once it has started without it shutting off. Finally, on mine you can only use the remote start twice before having to use the key to start it. It will run for ten minutes before shutting itself off.

I have had no issues with the remote start in prolonged -20F temperatures (my jeep stays outside and really should be plugged in). My last days off I started it from the back of a restaurant with a few walls between me and it (about 75' away).

I haven't noticed how far the unlock works because I don't normally unlock it until I have my hand on the door handle.

Hope this helps.
