So i did some towing this week (about 3500 lbs) and was a little worried about the trans temp when ascending grades. I don't tow very often and its usually short distances around town, but i may be moving from CA to Tulsa, OK and would pull a trailer. Would it be a good idea to install an auxilliary trans cooler and thermometer so i can monitor it? Factory warranty issues? I am also wondering what it would take to mount it behind the grille. |

If I remember correctly you have a trans cooler built into the radiator. You can get something like a ScanGauge to monitor the tranny temp but I don't think you'll have a problem with temp. |

I don't foresee you having any issues man, I've towed a travel trailer about 100miles at 4500 Pounds in 100plus heat last weekend and nothing happened. |

on my '08 Sport, i've got the trans cooler (looks like a small radiator on the bottom front of the radiator), but no factory hitch, so i don't think they were only installed w/ the tow package. I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time... |

Taken from wikibooks (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Jeep_Liberty/Transmissions): "Jeep Libertys with the 42RLE transmission have an auxiliary transmission cooler in front of the engine radiator. Libertys with the 45RFE transmission have a cooler built into the engine radiator." I'm pretty positive i've got the 42RLE with the trans cooler and no factory tow pkg |

You have some sort of trans cooler. The standard KK trans cooler is intergrated with the AC condensor,if one leaks you have to replace as one unit. |

Thanks everyone for the replies. I knew that i already had a trans cooler built in with the ac condenser after looking at Mopar's website. But my question was should I install an auxilliary trans cooler, or should the one be enough? |

The factory one should be plenty. I have yet to see a KK report a trans overheating problem from towing. Most trans issues are from over working in 4wd. |

I am about to get my tranni rebuilt. I have 137,500 miles. Many of the last 50,000 included towing. This month, after 4 hours on the road hauling a tailer with lots of stop and goes, the tranni begins to have trouble shifting. My mechanic has recommended rebuilding for about 6 months when I have taken it in for other servicing. The thermostat is not working and I notice it most during the winter. Does that keep the tranni cooling system from kicking in also? |

A little bit of a different vehicle, but I towed a 4500 lbs trailer from Auroa, OR to Phoenix, AZ with my Dads 03 KJ and had no issues what so ever. A little slow going through some of the passes but no mechanical issues what so ever. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=33.363552,-111.810247 |
