Post subject:  Engine Cleaning

I dont know if this topic has been posted before but whats the best way to clean the engine? I was going to take it up to the car wash and power spray it but have been hearing horror stories about pressure washing. I know not to directly spray the alternator or places that have wires coming out and fuse box but I dont really want to have to take a toothbrush to the engine! lol

Ask the dealer their method of engine compartment cleaning. Mine does use pressure washers, but they do know what areas to avoid and what kind of pressure to use. Personally, I would just spray it down with a pressure nozzle on a garden hose. Any more pressure than that might damage things. The air box and fuse box are covered. Everything else gets wet when you cross a deep stream.

Clean the motor while it is cool...

You won't hurt anything with a pressure washer. Just pay attention to what you're doing.

Okay so I'm going to sound dumb here but it's okay because it goes with my looks :D .

You are saying that it is okay to pop your hood, and spray water, maybe a lot of water over the engine department while it is cool and this shouldn't be a problem unless you do something really stupid.

Yes. I used to run a detail shop I've also been doing this on my personal cars for years.

Don't use a water hose though. Honestly (IMO) I think you will get more water than you want if you use a water hose.

Use the pressure washer at a car wash but let it cool down before you do so.

Don't use more "spray" than you need and no, don't do anything stupid like trying to blast water in a tight spot near anything electrical. It doesn't take much to get it clean. Most things under the hood are designed with a little water in mind to begin with. It'll be fine but since this is the internet and people tend to do stupid things (not saying you will  ), I'll throw out the ole disclaimer.... I'm not responsible if you (or anyone else) screws it up, so if you do this, you're doing so at your own risk.
