So over the past year or so ive noticed an ebb and flow among forums/threads/and members intel regarding many things. Almost like a fad or a flavor of the month, information is thrown at every one and then reneged on a time later. Id like to at least attempt to put one rumor to rest. K&N drop in air filter v/s OEM filter. Variables: mileage on jeep travel distance travel time speed route temperature weather conditions fuel station season blend equipment in jeep(weight of vic) Most of the variables i listed i can account for.. Mileage on jeep: JUST changed oil so shouldn't make a huge difference Travel Distance/Speed/time/route: All four are eliminated by only accounting for the data from the same stretch of highway i travel every day on the way to work. I can account for data on a 35 mile stretch, at the same time, at the same speed (I use my cruise control), same terrain being its a federal highway, and considering its the same route/speed/and distance, it will be a consistent time. Temp/Weather: I will watch the weather and try and choose the week with the most consistent temp/weather conditions for the testing. Fuel Station/Season blend: I will only fill up at the same fuel station. I Will use a fuel station that a friend owns and will time the test for when he gets the tanks filled so i know its a semi consistent blend of fuel. Equipment/Weight: well I wont be gaining any weight any time soon and i wont load any thing other than basics for work in the jeep so as not to affect the over all weight. There is also the gear I have on the jeep now, which will affect the mpg. But being i will be running the test with the exact same equipment the entire time the difference, if there is any, should still be evident or at least noticeable. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I thought of all this while i was on the way home from the gym so im sure i am over looking something..help me refine this a bit before i attempt to put the rumor to bed about air filters. Cheers

No offense (LOL) but maybe your current weight (the jeeps) may be interesting as it tends to effect all of the above. Plus it would be useful if another was to do the same test... Good luck, definitely interested! |

Should be interesting see if its different than mine after over 20,000 on the K&N ( finally wised up and threw it out) and finally to stock box and Amsoil carry on |

Ill look around and see if there is some where i can find a weigh station willing to let me weight the jeep with me in it haha |

******My own opinion****** Now my KK weights in at 5K which is probably the fattest one on here (KK wise) I have run both the OEM and the AEM brute force intake. In my many many miles, it is my opinion that: 1. The OEM intake will offer the best fuel economy 2. The AEM offered the best throttle response and a noticeable difference in HP/Torque The biggest factor I believe in fuel mileage was intake air temp. The OEM intake runs on average 2 to 5 degrees hotter then the out side air temp. When the intake becomes heat soaked, it runs 10 to 15 degrees hotter The AEM intake runs on average 10 to 15 degrees hotter then the out side air temp when the intake is not heat soaked. When the intake becomes heat soaked, it runs 20 to 35 degrees hotter. Now I could have wrapped my intake in exhaust heat tape, but I could never justify the cost. *On a funny little not, the refresh rate of the IAT sensor is way faster then the air temp sensor that is used for the display in your dash. Using my scan gauge, I can tell 10 to 20 seconds before my dash updates if the temp changes by looking at the IAT sensor reading.. |

Also depends on how long you want the engine to last.... ![]() (note: that's the old style Amsoil filter - they made it better since then) http://www.dieselbombers.com/chevrolet-diesel-tech-articles/16611-duramax-air-filter-testing.html Hey - this one looked interesting too http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/pdfs/air_filter_effects_02_26_2009.pdf |

Fram Standard Air Filter Tank 1 - 15.6mpg ~~~~~~~~~~ I wasnt able to find some where to weigh the Jeep, But I'm sure the minor difference in weight wont make a huge difference. More to come! |

Tank #2 15.83 I've been reading that how close the Vic is to an oil change may have an affect. So I'm goin to work out a formula (of sorts) to represent oil life and list I with the mpg. I'm close to a change change now so by the time I get my third tank data I'll get the fluid change. Should be interesting to see the last three tanks of an oil life span as compared to th first three. Then I'll do similarly with a fresh K&N. |

15.6mpg @%10 oil life Here is the formula for iol life. Every 3,000 miles i get a change so we will say 3,000 miles is %100 oil life So with that if i have traveled 1,500 miles i will have %50 oil life left. I have 300 miles left so im currently at %10 oil life left Once i change oil ill do another three tanks with OEM filter to compare MPG with oil life as a factor. |
