Post subject:  KK STEEL BUMPER (All done!!)

So i recently got a welder and i am going to attempt to fabricate my own bumper. I haven't welded since high school (i'm about to turn 30  ) and all i made in welding class were skateboard rails. That being said this project is going to be tough for me but i think i can pull it off with respectable results if i take my time. Today i did a cardboard mock up of just the basic shape. I plan on adding a radiator/ps cooler skid built in to the mounts. I obviously need to fill in the area below the turn signals and figure out a way to mount the signals themselves. I'm pretty happy with it except for having to make the front vertical fascia 6" instead of the 5" i was shooting for because the mounts would be too exposed and not look right. Tell me what you guys think.

Looking good! Keep with it.. Can you just leave the signals in the stock location? It kind of looks like they would still work. You just need to Fab a spacer that comes off the new steel bumper. I want to see it finished! Lol.

Yep the turn signal will def stay where the were and a filler comes of the bumper. They look like they are going to be tricky to mount correctly though. There are only two plastic studs that come off the back in an awkward position.

I agree with everyone else it looks great. The shape matchs the body shape of the Liberty.

Thanks guys. I forgot to mention i'll be putting d ring tabs that are welded though to the mount. Might do a hoop but not sure what to use as material since i can't bend round tube. Thinking maybe 1 1/2" conduit, buying a pre bent 90 elbow and cutting that in half and welding that together. Conduit might be too weak though, i dunno.

might be able to find a fab shop nearby that could bend metal tubing for your hoop. Cherokee prerunner style maybe? i think that look would go well on a KK

Looks good.
A few things come to mind though:
1) what are you doing about the radiator being exposed?
2) if your going through the trouble of making the bumper why not make it winch compatible?
3) any ideas on what you are doing to mount the turn signals?
4) how do you intend on mounting to the front cross member?

I don't necessarily expect answers. Just bringing up somethings that come to mind that would probably give you some trouble down the line

1.) like I said i'm building a psc/rad skid (like Boblemoche's)
2.)It will be winch compatable with a winch plate added, just not putting one in anytime soon.
3.) Bend 1"x1/8" flat into brackets
4.)The front cross member looks kinda weak, i'm using 2x2x1/4" angle bolted to the uniframe rails through the tow hook holes plus another hole rearward of them.

Didn't think that all man, i didn't mention those specifics in my first post (except the skid). Any suggestions or tips are more than welcome. This is my first bumper and i'm sure i'll run into a hangup or two...

Update: i found some free 3/16" A-36 steel plate and plenty of it. 8)

Cutting steel sucks. :dizzy: Took me an hour and a half to get this piece cut with a skilsaw and 7" abrasive disc. A Freud steel demon blade is on the way.
