My wives 2008 liberty (25,000 miles) has been throwing a check engine light about once a week sometimes twice. She immediately pulls over and does the on-off-on-off-on trick and looks at the odometer, all we get is dashes and then done. After driving for a while it goes off until the next time. At first I thought I had it dialed into when it rains or just after but it has now done it on dry days, thought it was gas cap but the code isn't there. Does the computer store the codes? How should I begin trying to narrow this down?

It is still under warranty, just didn't want to lose a day at the dealer.

You could get a scan tool from a local auto parts store, some will rent them to you and some will even give them to you for free to use in the parking lot, and the next time it comes on run a diagnostic and see what error codes come up. Write down the error code and check it on google to see what the error means.

You can also use this for reference on error codes but google can pull more details on the codes and possible fixes.
